An icon of our show, an illustration by talented Colombian artist Aburrideitor. She is a self-described “third-world rotting mutant.” She illustrates a world full of enchantingly dark, grimy figures that some consider “ugly” or “subnormal.” She generously donated some of her designs to our show so we could produce merch to help fund the exhibit. This includes her figure proudly stitching the anthem “Subversive Stitch” with her pubic hair and arsenal of thread in her war sash. Check out her own description of this illustration.
“With the words ‘Subversive Stitch’ I wanted to make a reference to Rozskia Parker’s book [The Subversive Stitch: Embroidery and the Making of the Feminine, from 1984] so I took up this combination of words, that I find very interesting, and brought them to our time. I came up with the idea through the process of thinking about the word ‘subversive’ which in my context, I’m from Colombia, South America, is a problematic word because Colombia has been in constant war between Colombian state, left-wing guerrillas and right-wing paramilitary groups for at least for at least 60 years which has left millions of deaths of innocent people. So the word subversive here is synonymous of guerrilla and guerrilla is synonymous of death and also in the last decade there are lots of innocent people that have been killed for being ‘subversive.’ So thinking of the word ‘Subversive” in this war and military context, I decided to draw a naked woman in an active position with a bullet belt but instead of carrying ammunition she’s carrying threads as a subtle and active proposal to attack through art.”
