PETERSBURG — Nine chihuahua-mix dogs underwent medical treatment after they were found abandoned in an alley Monday night. The caged dogs had various health problems and were visibly neglected, said Jaime McKnight, owner of Pawlicious Poochie Pet Rescue, which sheltered the animals after police brought them to the facility in a crate. "They were covered in feces, urine burns, invested with fleas and their nails were growing into their paws," McKnight said. "These dogs were in bad shape. "This is pretty normal for some backyard breeder to dump dogs that they’ve used up like this." According to police, a woman reported finding the dogs in a single cage in an alley off 15th Street N. Eight were still locked inside a cage approximately 2 feet by 3 feet. One had freed itself and was hiding behind a car near that alley that was west of 1020 15th St. N. Officer Kristopher Bunt arrived at the scene at about 8 p.m. He tried to call Pinellas County Animal Services, which would normally would take in abused animals. But they do not pick up dogs that late in the evening. Bunt then called different animal shelters to find a place that could treat and shelter them, police said. McKnight said the officer reached out to her because of her work with Partridge Animal Hospital, an organization that helps care for police dogs. Many of the nine dogs are older and have significant health problems, police said. A few had worms and one is blind in one eye. The dogs are being treated at the animal hospital, police said, and if they’re healthy enough could be placed for adoption starting Friday. Authorities are treating this incident as an animal abuse case, but no witnesses have come forward yet.
