As a child, he had been consistently psychologically tortured by his horror terror crow lusus. His lusus would make him hunt down Trolls to offer and feed it. The catch was, the lusus would feed on them alive, and with its horror terror powers projected what the victims felt onto Acapha as it was happening. This created a phobia in Acapha-- when the screams and pain and torture stopped, where would it go? What happened to the person that was just there? Is there an afterlife? Did it really just... cease? This terrified Acapha to no end.

Until one night when a stray cat caught and killed his lusus. As one last punishment, his lusus projected the feelings of its own pain and death onto Acapha who lied in hysterics on the floor. Acapha was now free.

Unfortunately, the threat of death followed Acapha wherever he went. His former matesprit committed suicide, and much later in his life Acapha was diagnosed with horn cancer. If he didn’t act quickly, the cancer would spread to the rest of his body. Terrified, he gives it all he’s got to find a cure-- even if the experiments he conducts are unethical and unorthodox. He won’t die. He won’t let himself die, and he doesn’t care who will get hurt in the process. He mustn’t find out what’s on the other side...

as for the fantroll doctor guy i did mention, this is Acapha. and the guy who operated on Expyno :) diseased old man who has many regrets, and many more cats

You can read about him on his TH, but the gist is:

Poor guy was tormented by his horror terror lusus throughout his younger sweeps which gave him a massive fear of death and the afterlife-- not the act of dying itself, but whatever comes after. A stray cat eventually eats his lusus, which is why he loves cats so much. Trauma coping animals.

Later in life he developed cancer in his horn. He's a little too desperate to not let this cancer spread throughout his body, so he works tirelessly to try and find a cure. His research got noticed by a Big Corporation in my sandbox named Artilleron-- who is basically my equivalent of Umbrella from Resident Evil :)

Artilleron made him a deal, that they'd fund his treatments and research if he would work on a black listed project for them, find a cure for a terrible disease. Naturally he agreed to this. Acapha genuinely does want to help the betterment of health and science, outside of his own obsessive research. They set him to work at research sites where the gov sends their unwanteds and caught rebels, which is where he finds Expyno.

Expyno, who was immune to the disease, was the key for Acapha finding the cure. But once Acapha found the cure, Artilleron took it, booted him, stripped his name from their records and used the disease that the cure was made for to help certain politicians gain some power.

Ashamed, disgraced, and disgusted, Acapha is now a bit of a recluse. No funding to his name he settles on kidnapping Trolls to use as experiments for his own research. The only thing he really chooses to focus on is his cancer now. Oh, and his cats!

also the guy who cut Expyno open, which he does not regret, but DOES regret unknowingly being a part of the thing where gov used his cure to turn a disease into a bioweapon :)

The Dermashen Disease

Some long sweeps ago, a pandemic broke out with a new illness that later became known as the Dermashen Disease. This disease became considered as the worst outbreak in modern Alternian history. People infected would start to exhibit flu-like symptoms after a short incubation period of eight hours or less, and would rapidly decline in health from there.

The disease would dehydrate a Troll's internal organs, and externally would dry up the Troll's skin so much that they turned white, cracked and flaky. It was often that infected Trolls' would be described as "living ashes." Other symptoms included dry coughing and often coughing up blood, headaches and migraines, itchiness, pus discharge from the skin or nails, fatigue, chest pains, dizziness, weakness, light-headedness, delirium, confusion, difficulty breathing, losing the sense of touch, and lack of appetite.

The most common method of transmission was through contact of the infected skin cells, as well as airborne particles. Coughing, sneezing, and physical contact would increase chances of others contracting the disease. The most notable, however, was that skin from the infected would flake off and travel air-born or be left behind on surfaces, causing further risk of infection either via contact or breathing in a particle. As much, the disease was highly infectious and quarantine was often difficult to manage.

But where did it come from?

The state of this side of Alternia was already in political peril as there was a recent shift in power in both the Highblood Council of the Capital and local sanctions of surrounding cities. This was because there was a change in county territory, the Circuses that controlled them warring for power and influence. While this was not uncommon, Athena's kind influence while in Government and the words of Lowblood or Mutant prophets at the time had created rising tension between the surrounding Highbloods and Lowbloods of the area.

While the new faces of authority promised peace to come, most were not as innocent as they would make you believe. One such politician out of many was Ventra Kirmyr, the Secretary of Health on the Highblood Council, who had arranged a plan for the Council to obtain a massive profit through exploitation of pharmaceuticals while at the same time reinforcing political favor from Highbloods and kill off Lowbloods. Knowing that Athena would get in the way if she knew, GHB arranged to secretly sell her off to slavery. Though this was not public knowledge and anything that could have put any of the Council in the spotlight would have been covered up by the corporation they were in partnership with: Artilleron.

Artilleron is a large corporation with many subsidaries in different industries all over Alternia. They were the face of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, transportation, marketing, tourism, construction, and much more, though this allowed them to work on more illegal activities under the surface. Artilleron is responsible for creating the disease and the cure for it, of which Ventra and others like him profited from after certain powers and decisions swayed in their favor.

Acapha DiCese was the man behind the vaccine, having been an Artilleron employee unaware of the company's true intentions and endeavors. Having made impressive progress on the research of his own cancer Artilleron had hired him to work on a blacklisted project, a cure for a deadly disease, in exchange for funds and aid with his illness. Acapha, unaware that he was the last key Artilleron needed to release the disease, set to work to find a cure.

He was stationed at one of many experimental camps. Rebels, prisoners, rejects, orphans, many had been sent here to be experimented on. Though Acapha was not pleased with such arrangements, he figured the ends would justify the means. After some work, elbow-grease, screams and sobs of innocent Trolls, Acapha would find the cure and send it in to Artilleron.

One such victim would be Expyno Dioxal, back then a young boy. At the time struggling, he ran into Ventra and asked for help. Thinking this would be a good opportunity to have someone shout propaganda in the streets of his power, the Highblood agreed and took him in to feed him. Expyno though could not resist snooping through the politician's home office in which he had found the most damning receipts. Ventra sent him off to the camp to cover his tracks, and Expyno was then experimented on by Acapha himself.

Not long after, Artilleron had released the disease to the public, infecting many and not distributing the hard-earned cure. Acapha, growing suspicious, was fired and any trace of him having worked on the cure erased. No one would believe him if he went against the most powerful corporation in the world-- the very same state Expyno found himself in. The difference between them is that Acapha often locks himself in his hive obsessing over his own cancer, in part to get better and in part to forget about the guilt of contributing to such a deadly mass outbreak. Expyno never wanted to forget, and even though everyone called him a freak or steered cleared of him for it, he was vocal about his experiences and grew an obsession with overnmental conspiracy theories.

During the pandemic, Athens had contracted the disease and died from it. Because he had rainbow drinker genetics, he was able to come back to life. By then power and favor had been restored, money exchanged, and the cure was distributed, allowing Athens a second chance to recover. The vaccine, paired with the enhanced health that being a drinker offered him, allowed him to recover quickly.

After the pandemic died down and life returned relatively to what it had been before, Athena had been rescued and brought back --not to the GHB's approval, though he was not willing to risk another riot in the streets so soon.

Expyno, several sweeps later in modern day, had been learned about by Omnius. Donning the disguise of the Initiate, Expyno's hero, he brought Expyno to Ventra's hive and gave him the opportunity to kill him for what he's done. Expyno did so, though not without guilt, and he did not feel as satisfied as he thought he would. He and the Initiate has not met again since.

The Dermashen Disease still exists, and is still considered one of the most fatal illnesses. Due to vaccination, it is hardly ever seen, but the event is still fresh in many people's minds. The truth has not been unveiled, however, and some people will not rest until it is. Others are more than willing to forget. Many more will likely never know about it.
