A Case Of Conscience by James Blish $9 Ballantine Books Paperback First Edition (1958) My understanding is that this is a true first edition. This book won a Hugo Award in 1959 for Best Novel. In this book, we have discovered a planet peopled by an apparently gentle and civilized race, the Lithians, who are gradually revealed as being literally a creation of the Devil, intended to delude and ensnare humanity. The protagonist, a Jesuit priest, too late recognizes the Lithian ambassador to Earth for what he is, and is powerless to oppose him. The cover art is by Richard Powers. . James Blish - A Case of Conscience (1958) The winner of the 1959 Hugo Award, James Blish story of first contact and religion is a pretty interesting one. Our main character is a Jesuit priest who is assessing a planet and later on bring an egg of the sentient race of being from that planet to Earth. He is conflicted about his feelings for the planet and its inhabitants which he sees as possibly being a creation of something other than God. The most interesting thing about this novel is the theme itself. Blish is a perfectly competent writer but he is not really a stylist, he would go on to write some fine adaptations of the majority of Star Trek's original series' episodes, for example, so, a workmanlike writer. Still the ideas here are intriguing enough to make it a novel worth reading, although the ending seemed to me to be a bit too much, things could have been left very much more in the theoretic field rather than being so literal.
