âI know there are lawyers for things exactly like this and I know youâre, uuuh, not that, but I canât afford one. So.â Bev shrugs, itâs quick, his shoulders pop up with quite the exuberance. A weird, stark contrast to his heavy face.  âOh, actually, I, uh,â air pushes through his nose in a nervous huffy laugh, âI donât know, how much, how much do I pay you? My name happens to, uh, be my fatherâs as well, uh, I donât know if that complicates matters. Well, no, Iâm acting like thatâs some unrelated coincidence, that my father and I have the same name. Itâs not. Thatâs why Iâm doing this. Can you change my name? Can you change it on everything? Like, everything. Is that possible, I guess is what Iâm asking?â

Mim thinks it learned how to think wrong maybe. Mim also thinks it does not care. How can you tell it it is supposed to think this way. If it thought the way you think it should, it would be thinking like you. It does not want to think like you. It wants to think like Mim. Mim does not want to change. But sometimes, it wants to know how other people know things and why it doesnât know them.
It thinks Elliot knows the same things. Thinks the same things. Sees the same things with his big reverse eight ball eyes. Mim likes Elliotâs eyes. Maybe their views are not identical. But they are from the same building, from the same fire escape. It likes that picture.
âI do not alltheways do it right. But I do it.â
Mim does not care about many people. It cares less about Many Peopleâs thoughts. Here is a surprise: it cares about Elliotâs thoughts! All of them!
âWhat do you think. What are you thinkening thoughtening.â
It tries to tap Elliotâs forehead but it is not always good with body direction. It lays its whole hand on his forehead instead and rolls its lips in behind its teeth to hide its smile.

âOuch. That looks like it hurts.â Jack is off somewhere tending to the marshalâs wounds and Kate doesnât want to stop to think about that, so instead she sits down at a respectful distance, pulls her legs up to her chest and rests her chin on her knee, looking somewhere past his shoulder. He looks like he took twice as much as a few of the survivors. âI donât have anything to fix you up but,â she scuffs around in her pocket and produces a half empty roll of mints, pushing one to the edge of the pack with her thumb as sheâs holding them out in his direction, âif you wanna wash bad tastes out of your mouth these are pretty good.â
âWhat do youuuuuuuuuuu...? Hmmmm? Hup. Hup!â They have run out of breath. Sam is still relearning how to talk and breathe at the same time, a tall challenge for a being who spent a week in the putrefaction stage of decay before releasing themselves from the dirt. Sam takes a moment, allowing their lungs a refill. Their poor pulmonary tissues are still stiff and shiver a little in their chest. Their alveoli ache.    âWhaaaahhhh-t do you like--â They take a pause for breath. â--most about eating?â
