Basic Things About Ship And Marine Engineering
General aspects of shipping
1. Importance of shipping in the national and international trade
3. Types of ships nd cargoes
4. Shipsboard orfanization
5. Nautical terms-parts of the ship
Specific learning objectives
1. Importance of shipping in the national international trade
the trainee will be able to :
i state the role of shipping in the national and international trade .
2. The trainee will be able to:
i Use a gobal map (without lables), name and identify location of continents, and oceans.
ii State international sea routes for ships.
Above all these courses are taught in Marine Engineering Courses.
3. Types of ships and cargoes:
differentiate different types of merchat vessels as mentioned below:
state the use of each type
state the type of cargo carried by each type of vessel.
4. Shipboard organization
Trainee will able to state that:
there are two distinct department on the ship
the departments are nautical department and engineering departments
nautical department is responsible for cargo operation, navigation of the vessel and general maintenance of the ship and administration
enginerring department is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all machinery onboard ship and the propulsion system.
each department consists of officers and ratings.
nautical department consists of master, chief officer, 2/0,3/0, cadet or apprentices and deck ratings or gp ratings and navy officer duties,
engineering department consits os chief engineer, 2/e,3/e,4/e, delectricians or fitter and engine ratings or gp ratings.
master is overall in charge of the ship.
crews are either deck ratings or engine ratings, or g.p. ratings (general purpose)
catering department includes chief cook & g.s who are responsible for cooking food for officers and crew and general housekeeping in accommodation.
