Accommodating ladders on vessels and reflex level gauge
An accommodating ladder is one way of getting on or off from the ship’s deck. The ladder is mostly used by the crew and cargo members at the port areas. Like any other deck equipment, the accommodation ladder can also be used offshore to board on the ships’ deck from a boat or from the deck to the boat.
The installation of accommodating ladders seems so simple, the entire process including the maintenance is strictly managed by its crew members. That is why if anything happens with the accommodating ladders, like an accident, only the crew members will be held responsible.
The general arrangement of accommodating ladder
The general arrangements on an accommodating ladder follow these principles,
Accommodating ladders are permanently fitted on the port side and the starboard side, so the boat or the ship itself won’t need to make a full turn each time.
The system is designed in such a way that the accommodating ladders can be stowed 90 degrees to its rigged position.
The accommodating ladders have fixed steps with foldable aluminum handrails
The system is designed to be very flexible, so it can be rigged alongside or in a parallel way
An electric spindle is also used to move the ladders in and out
The new improved accommodating ladders can be controlled by a push-button
The telescopic arm is placed in such a calculated way that it will never collide with the container gantry
Regulations and requirements
The embarkation and the disembarkation is done at a remote area and should never be done where the cargo unloads
There should be adequate lighting on both sides to keep the area illuminated
A lifebuoy with self-igniting light should always be there for immediate use in emergency
The placement of the ladder should be done perfectly, so the head can reach to the deck’s surface
The ladder must be attached to the ship to avoid any accidents
There should be adequate safety signs or posters near each accommodating ladders
There should also be a safety net, so if a person loses his/her grip offshore, they won’t fell into the water
Ensure that all the security checks have been done, which includes life jacket and safety harness
Check the electrical power supply on the winch
Remove lashes from the accommodating ladder
Check the remote control that will be used to control the accommodating ladders on both sides
Position the hand railings at the upper platform first
Connect the handrails with the upper platform hand railings
Rig the lower platform and position the stanchions accordingly
Use safety nets around the rigged ladder
Reflex level gauge: Working principle
The reflex type level gauge are designed in such a way that it can detect the difference in refractive indices of the gas and liquid.
The reflex level gauges are used are most commonly used to detect the level within a specific vessel where the primary principles are based on the difference in refractive indices of gas and liquid.

The reflex level gauges offer a well-defined image of water levels, which reduces the risk of distortions. It is simple mathematics that if there isn’t any kind of distortions in the reading areas, the reader will be able to get flawless results. Due to this reason, the reflex level gauges are installed in a tilt-view or vertical position to provide a much greater accuracy while reading.
