Phainon awoke slowly, becoming aware of the pain in his joints first before the rest of the world bled into focus. Chest rising as he breathed, he took in the sight of the night sky, and realised then that they must not have made it back to Okhema.
His gaze slid to the side, and his brows furrowed not because he didn't expect Mydei's presence, but because his hands were sunken into...
"Is that water?"
Phainon's voice was raspy, and the sound of it made him frown. Just how long was he out for his voice to sound like this? Or had he been louder on the battlefield than he thought?
Before he could think any more on the matter, something wet was pressed to his chest, and he flinched more due to the temperature than the pain. He could hear Mydei saying something-- likely some instruction for him to keep still, if not another stern comment-- but when the cloth Mydei held came back stained with glittering gold, Phainon's expression softened.
"Hey..." Reaching out, Phainon's hand curved over the warrior's knee. "You don't have to do that, Mydeimos. I'm okay."
Only in the middle of Mydei's cleaning did Phainon realise how bad the wound was. A few inches away and it likely would've gotten an organ.
