We end with the gorgeous Hayley! Hayley joined her good friend Davina (from week 1 of #ACLTsBigThankYou!!) at #DansBday1403 registration drive at Global Radio this year, where she registered to be a stem cell donor. Once she had completed her registration, off her own back ventured out into Leicester Square, handing out literature, encouraging passers-by to take a few minutes out of their day in Central London to come in and get swabbed! How wonderful is that?!

Hayley says "The reason I registered and volunteered for ACLT is because I understand the more multicultural our society becomes the greater the challenges the medical society faces in finding a match, especially within the ethnic community, and I don't want a mother to lose her child because I didn't step forward because I listened to a MYTH. I urge you to talk to ACLT about whatever barriers are stopping you taking the 2 second swab. Remember Ubuntu."

Today we show our appreciation to all those who we have registered as blood donors! Jason is a great example of a regular blood donor, having donated blood 34 times since 2009!! Jason’s first donation, made in February 2009, was in honour of his dear friend, Daniel De-Gale. Jason says “Following Daniels passing, donating was the most passionate way I could demonstrate my dedication and commitment to both Daniel and the ACLT. Donating gives me a great sense of pride, not only for Daniel but for all those like him. It has been an honour to know Daniel and it is even more of an honour to continue his legacy and promote the endless work of the ACLT, on top of the active campaigning amongst BME groups to increase the all important number of ethnic minorities on the donor register.”

Through Jason’s efforts of raising awareness and inspiring others to donate he has been involved in a four year blood donation research project and a national blood donation campaign. Jason says “Just 10 minutes of your time could save someone else an entire lifetime. If my blood is able to save just one life then it is a life worth saving”, his only regret is not having started to donate sooner.

Meet Yohana! Yohana first joined #TeamACLT as an administrator within ACLT offices, helping out in her down time when she taking a break from studying. Yohana then joined our team of volunteers last year (2014) and has since become one of our ACLT models, featuring in our recent “#BeingAfricanCaribbean..” campaign with Anthony Nolan. Yohana is a pleasure to have as part of the team, and we’re thankful for her support!

Today is dedicated to blood donor, Ria! Ria first heard about ACLT in 2011 when Orin gave one of his famous presentations at a show in Hackney Empire. Ria's aunt had recently passed away from cancer and so she felt inspired to become a regular blood donor as well as being on both the bone marrow and organ donation registers. Last year (2014) Ria decided to take that extra step in becoming an #ACLTVolunteer and has done an excellent job thus far!

Ria tells us "I wish I could have done something to save my own aunt, but by being a donor I may be able to save someone else. I volunteer for this reason, because we never know when we or someone we love may need stem cells, blood or a particular organ, so the more people we can encourage to join the register, the more chance we have of helping people survive." We thank you, Ria. Your aunt would be so proud!

Today is dedicated to one of our awesome fundraisers, Sarah. Sarah found out about us two years ago when her son was ill with the serious blood disorder, Aplastic Anaemia. He received alternative treatment as neither of his sisters were stem cell matches and an unrelated donor matched donor also could not be found. Sarah tells us “I decided I needed to do something about the issue, hence why we support the ACLT through fundraising and continue to raise awareness to increase the number of Black donors on the stem cell register. I particularly support this cause because I want to be a lifesaver,  should there be a need to donate blood or stem cells. The statistics in relation to the lack of black people on the donor register are too shocking for the Black community to ignore. I want to make a difference - no matter how small. It's such a privilege to be part of the ACLT family.”

We'd like to dedicate #ACLTsBigThankYou for today to the incredible Naomi! She decided to join the UK stem cell register in 2005 through ACLT at Notting Hill Carnival after hearing the very low number of ethnic minority individuals on the stem cell register. Amazingly, years later Naomi was found to be a match! She went on to donate her stem cells to a stranger in desperate need in October 2007. Naomi says “Knowing that by taking just a few hours out of your life you could potentially save another's feels surreal; but that is what being a bone marrow donor is. Looking back I feel privileged to be someone else's lottery”. Naomi can now proudly say that she is a life saver, and we couldn't be more thankful! Thank YOU Naomi.

Good morning #ACLTSupporters! To begin this week, meet Orchid! Orchid is just one of our many inspiring volunteers. She has a huge understanding about how important our work is at ACLT, as Orchid had her own personal battle with leukaemia. Once Orchid overcame her battle with leukaemia she decided to channel her energy into helping others in a similar position, and for that we feel she deserves a standing ovation! Orchid says “ACLT is such a wonderful extended family and volunteering with them over the years has been a delightful and rewarding learning experience.  Their love, dedication and passion to support and assist others go far beyond any expectation.”

Thank you so much Orchid for becoming a part of #TeamACLT, we’ve loved having you on board all these years and we look forward to continue working with you for many more!
