Dentre todas as coisas que Gregory Newman costumava se questionar, uma martelava em sua cabeça com frequência, ao menos nos últimos dias. Como era mesmo que ele havia parado naquele lugar? Aquilo era um pequeno fim de mundo, que no entanto, estava começando a agradar o jornalista. No entanto, havia dias, aqueles quando o ócio toma conta e você quer fazer algo a respeito, em que Greg realmente queria estar em Nova York, mas, ele não podia, então ia simplesmente a sua cafeteria favorita na cidade – Era mais fácil quando ele ainda não havia batido o seu carro. – e ficava horas e horas sentado, relendo pela milésima vez “O gene egoísta”.
Naquela tarde não estava sendo diferente, ele estava lá sentado, com sua camisa xadrez de botões, sua calça jeans, sua barba mal feita, que agora tinha uma falha, devido aos pontos que levara abaixo do queixo, no dia em que um carro bateu contra o seu no cruzamento. E por falar em batida...lá estava um grande problema, Gregory não conseguia exatamente tirar isso da cabeça, porque agora, além de estar sem carro e com alguns machucados, ele também tinha machucado Tiffany Gordon, uma ruiva gordinha que estava com ele no carro, no dia do acidente. Mas, esse nem era o ponto, o ponto que ficava indo e vindo em sua cabeça era a possibilidade de no dia do acidente ser Brett Alvensberg, a garota com quem ele estava saindo, no carro e não Tiffany. Quer dizer, claro que Gregory se preocupava com Tiff, ela era sua amiga, inclusive, no entanto, Brett era diferente, ela era alguns anos mais nova que ele, ela era frágil, ela era delicada, ela era uma boneca e alguns adjetivos mais que ele não havia decidido ainda.
Gregory balançou a cabeça, desviando os pensamentos, fechou o livro e tomou um gole longo de seu café, soltou o ar pela boca e encarou a pessoa na sua frente, afinal, o lugar estava cheio e ele tivera de sentar em uma mesa já ocupada. Estavam ali há dez minutos e nenhuma conversa havia fluído, tudo isso porque quando o Newman chegou, ele nem se quer queria conversar, mas, as coisas tinham mudado agora. – Está um dia bonito, não é? Quer dizer...apesar do clima.
