Mapping the Van Coke Kartel road to this point is an exercise in trying to keep up. Although Francois and Wynand remain its chief directors, a good number of cooks have visited this kitchen, and its recipe is continually prone to another rethink. The fact that the band’s body of work holds together in such solidly separate stages is a credit to the original duo’s creative determination: if they’re good at one thing, it’s following an idea.

In the narrative of their progression, everything that the Kartel means is in everything they’ve done: over three albums, three ideas have evolved in equally disparate directions, each one a break from the contempt of close-minded comfort. Their self-titled debut disc was a brazen act of unvarnished violence; in its wake, Waaksaam en Wakker seemed as much a signal of intended surprise as a symptom, its layers thrown together as a patchwork guard against monotony. Skop, Skiet en Donner (2010, Rhythm Records) thus arrives as a final foundry of unexpected effects, the Kartel’s resolve to upset the apple cart of dull equivalance steering them once again into a greater, finer unknown.

Peach van Pletzen is a good guide through new terrain. There were only so many toys for Francois and Wynand to play with by themselves before they were going to get bored, and here their producer has built them something that will endure, in their ears and ours. That first CD had its array of coarse edges, the follow-up liked its layers (of cello, upright bass, and telephone); this one has space, range, vastness. This one has landscape. In a sense, what helps this disc to fly from its history is a stable maturity (perhaps, as a band, the Kartel have left behind learning how to walk and the angst of growing up; maybe they’ve settled into an idea of identity) but that might imply that the maturing is over and routine has been reached, and that unhappy moral has no easy bedding in an album whose lesson is: constant change takes you to stranger places.

And this album is one of the strangest. Francois’ lyricism relies on gloomy obscurity, on what Chuck Palahniuk might call “burnt tongue moments”, but in Afrikaans, and delivered in a husky growl. It can be scary stuff, as when, in “Huissiek Gebede”, he and Laudo Liebenberg combine to snarl and sneer their way through “dis al lankal te laat, ons het meer as suurstof nodig / laat die nag ons nie blind maak … dis jy lafaard wat deur my mond praat; die gees het hierdie liggaam verlaat”. Elsewhere, he can be by turns jokey, sober and depressed, one moment asserting “ek is nie veel van ’n danser nie, maar ek sal dans as ek dronk genoeg is” (“Voor Ons Stof Word”), and the next declaring “vrees in jou oë, ek’s bevrees daar’s dood in jou oë / die beton van die stad vreet gate sonder vrae in jou geesdrif in” (“Ondier Kom!”). He reaches his most down in “Spookstad”, pleading, “niks voel meer dieselfde nie; miskien sal slaap my kan genees, maar ek ek is nie moeg genoeg nie … elke week ’n nuwe krisis … as jy hier bly mag iets sleg dalk met jou gebeur”. A cover of “Maniac” forces the mood upwards, before another cover, of Koos du Plessis’ “Skadu’s Teen Die Muur”, takes it down again, and this atmosphere – of restlessness, distress and regret – mists over and filters through the fronds of Peach’s electronic scenery.

What scenery, though; in the Kartel context and in producer mode, Van Pletzen leaves behind his grand electro-epic mannerisms in favour of allowing these songs to sing. The debut album’s self-aware gaps are here filled with a murky fog of buzzing busy-ness, the follow-up’s mania is harnessed with sticky, smoky, spiralling lines: Skop, Skiet is Van Coke Kartel, most definitely, but regenerated with a different energy that has them reaching for a different place and a new end. Where VCK swung and Waaksaam strained, this one stalks; it is a deliberate, sure-footed predator, skulking in self-made shadows and waiting in whispers. If their debut was a surge of insistence and Wakker a wide-eyed watchdog, this is an iceberged alligator of patient intent. Donner has a purpose beneath those steaming, swirling depths – its pose is a vantage point, its mystery a mask.

The slippery position of careful uncertainty makes this album difficult to grasp with anxious hands; unlike either of its predecessors, it won’t clutch or confront the ear, and you’ll have to wait for it to come to you. To that end, the three acoustic renditions of older songs – Raad Vanuit Twee Oorde, Algehele Kontrole and Ondersteuning Geweier– might be most useful as a way into the album they bracket, for these are no mere stripped, strum-along cast-offs. The latter is appropriately labelled as a “gospel version”, its hymn-like handclaps and brooding, swampish sincerity managing to belie the sweeping strangeness of its surrounds. Infused anew with Peach’s gimmickry and Francois’ prowling precision, these versions become fully re-imagined translations; as they slide into a more measured, quirkier pace, they creep off into the album’s undergrowth and leave a trail for the mind to follow.

Skop, Skiet en Donner should be played backwards, from last to first – if you shake the leaves, look through the trees, deep within the eccentric ambiguity of that jungle you’ll find weird little monsters waiting to tell you a story.
