Prompt: "I don't mind sharing the blankets with you."
Sorry this took me so long @acpoe82, I was trying to finish up ch.3 of Sunsets and couldn’t concentrate on anything else until now. Hope it’s good! 😋
Rated G. Canon Compliant. Pre-Epilogue. Enjoy!!
t’s been snowing since noon. I can see from my window, there’s at least five inches of the stuff already covering the green in the middle of the Village.
I turn to Peeta, who’s sketching a picture of a mushroom we harvested not two days ago, and chew the inside of my cheek.
“You’re staying the night.” It’s not a request, or even a question. I’m not letting him set foot outside this house if I have to hide his boots in the basement.
The weather is always so unpredictable this time of the year, some days are warm enough, mushrooms grow ripe for eating; others, like today, it snows out of the blue, like it’s the middle of winter. I’m not letting him out of my sight this evening.
Peeta nods absentmindedly, “We gotta check on Haymitch, though.”
“He’s got soup from yesterday. I checked on him this morning, before it got bad.”
Peeta wrinkles his nose. “Is he gonna eat that cold?”
I shrug. “He’s got a working stove.”
“He doesn’t know how to work that thing… which is good I guess. He might burn down the house with him in it,”
“Hmm, I didn’t say he’d use the stove, only that he has one.”
Peeta closes the plant book we’ve been working on today, and looks up. “I did laundry this morning, all of my bedding is probably frozen solid on the line by now.”
“I don't mind sharing the blankets with you."
“I washed most of your stuff too.” He looks sheepish.
It’s something he started doing when he first came home: pick up after me, wash the filthy clothing I hadn’t cared about until his arrival… he still hasn’t broken the habit of washing both our laundry.
The corner of my lips quirk up, “I know.” I don’t mind it. Keeps him busy, and I know where he is, without having to hover around him— a habit I can’t seem to break out of after his return.
“I’d still share the blankets currently on my bed, the ones I was wrapped in this morning. You didn’t take those.”
“We will have to share the bed too then.” He says rubbing the back of his neck and squinting at the wall.
“Just like last night.” And the night before, and the one before that one…
“I guess so. I think my last pair of pajama pants are in your dresser anyway.”
Probably true; he’s got a full drawer to himself with clothes and other stuff in my dresser, his own shoe rack in my closet, and his own set of toiletries and a toothbrush on my bathroom shelf. Why he insists on going home every other evening, just to rush back here in the middle of the night, is beyond me.
It’s clear to both of us, we can’t sleep without the other, even if we don’t talk about it during the daytime. He’s as good as living in here already, but I don’t think either one of us is ready to make it official.
“Okay.” He exhales a long, calming breath, “Shall we start on supper then?”
