Luna moth caterpillar (Actias luna) making a birch leaf disappear
I raised these juicy caterpillars from eggs collected from this moth, which was found struggling in the wind at the very summit of a mountain on the full moon last June

TODAY'S FACT IS
Did you know that the Luna Moth (Actias Luna) is a moth known for its green wings and long tails? This is one of the larger moths in North America, with an average wingspan of 114mm, but they have been recorded as large as 178mm. The caterpillar will make clicking sounds at predators to try to shoo them away, but if that doesn't work, it'll throw up on the predator and that usually works. The long tails on the hindwings are believed to be used to disrupt the echolocation of bats that are looking for a late night snack. These beauties do not have mouths as adults and, as such, only live for a couple weeks at most as an adult if it's lucky.
