A lot of people are saying that ‘First Kill’ got cancelled because of the “bad acting”. Specifically Imani’s acting of Calliope Burns these people bring up.
I’ve just got to say though that I am tired of a narrative representing a character instead of a character representing a narrative. The narrative required Cal to be stand-offish, reserved, stoic, emotionally guarded. That is not bad acting. That is literally the CHARACTERISTICS of a well and carefully realized character. Imani portrayed those characteristics for Calliope and the very fact you can pick up on them at all proves that she was actually doing a good acting performance.
The character Xena in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ displays similar characteristics, specifically in Season 1 and 2 and absolutely no one called Lucy Lawless a bad actress for it. Because these were the characteristics of her character. Not her not knowing what she was doing with portraying the character. It was intentional. Now either the people saying this about Imani’s performance of Calliope either don’t realize this and therefore misunderstand the character or it’s a smokescreen and they’re just using this pitiful excuse to hate on a black character and a black actress in a leading role on a TV show. And I’m fairly certain the majority of people saying this bullshit are very much the latter.
I see you, your lies and your thinly disguised discrimination. And so does she.
