Three Months Later…
“You’re about to pop!”
Katniss chuckled at Johanna’s words. However, she expectedas much from her husband’s outspoken co-star; the two had grown close whileJohanna and Peeta were filming in Katniss’ hometown. The woman had become a constantsource of support as Katniss dealt with being the wife of an Academy Award actor.
“Tell me about it.” Katniss moved her hands along theprotruding bump covered by the designer dress. “Every morning, I wake up and Isee less and less of my feet!” She chuckled before peering into the café whereher sister Prim was grabbing a smoothie. “Thank goodness for Prim or else Iwould have no one to help me into my sandals.”
“When is Peeta coming back?” Johanna asked as she put hersunglasses on to hide her face. It would not be hard to spot actress JohannaMason’s penetrating brown eyes along Sunset Boulevard.
“Sometime today…I hope,” Katniss told her. “I couldn’t makeit to the Manhattan premiere because of the little gymnast in my stomach, so hehad to go solo. Rue agreed to protect him from any overzealous fans by going ashis escort!”
“That little genius,” her friend remarked with a grin. Ruewas like their surrogate sister on set; the girl was only nineteen and immenselyclever. Second Chances was already guaranteeda nomination for “Best Original Screenplay” and Rue was being tapped to work onsome other projects with Haymitch Abernathy, the director of the movie. “Way tothrow the paparazzi off.”
“Or, there’ll be something on TMZ later this week reportingthat Peeta has been cavorting with his younger flame.” Katniss shook her headas she put her own sunglasses on. “I don’t know how anyone can do this.”
“You do it because you love him,” Johanna responded as sheput an arm around Katniss’ shoulders. “And, because the man who the paparazzi are photographing isn’t the guy that you know inside your home.”
Katniss nodded in agreement. “If they only knew how much heenjoys folding onesies.”
“Sorry that took so long!” Her little sister, Prim camebounding out of the café with a smoothie. “What’s a green drink? Everyone inthere has one in their hand.”
Johanna wrinkled her nose. “Something with vegetables.”
“How you stay that thin isn’t fair,” Katniss groused.
“Honey, it’s called a hot personal trainer,” the starletretorted with a grin. “His name is Brutus and he has muscles bigger than Prim.”
“KATNISS!” There was flash in her face and she turned away. “WHEREIS PEETA?”
Her first thought was to immediately get Prim away from the onslaughtof photographers and paparazzi. She reached for Prim’s hand but then therewas a sudden wave of people and she felt her sister being pulled away.
“PRIM!” Katniss pushed away from the camera flashes.
“Everyone move!” Johanna demanded loudly. She met Katniss’eyes and signaled over to her car—a black Escalade a few steps away.
Making her way to it, Katniss tried to avoid thenumerous questions being fired out at her:
“Katniss, are you concerned about the pictures of Peeta withRue Roberts during the Manhattan premiere?”
“There’s rumors that you are carrying twins due to yourfuller figure. Can you confirm?”
“Why are there no pictures of your wedding? Is your relationshipreal?”
She was prepared for the question about Rue so it did notbother her.
Her doctor told her that she had preeclampsia which caused theswelling—though that question burned.
The claim about her relationship being fraudulent had beenthe one that cut through her.
There were no pictures because there were no cameras. Sheand Peeta wanted it to be just them and those closest to her. Johanna had noteven been there as she left to distract the press from the ceremony.
“Katniss, I’m here!”
Prim stood next to Johanna’s car and her lips rose in a grinseeing the person standing next to her sister.
Peeta.
As she made her way over to them, Katniss felt a sudden, sharp pain hit her back.
It wasn’t the baby.
Someone had elbowed her and the force of it, along with theweight of her stomach, suddenly had her lurching towards the concrete. Her armswent in front of her in hopes to protect their little one and Katniss closedher eyes preparing for impact.
But, she didn’t fall.
Her eyes opened to find a worried Peeta looking down at her.
Katniss stared up at him in a daze. “My hero.”
He smiled at her words. “I try.”
Helping her up, Peeta helped her straighten herself as Primand Johanna joined her side. Her husband lunged at the crowd aiming for theperson standing in front of them—a balding man with a paunch belly and a largecamera.
“You do not touch my wife!” Peeta roared as he ripped thecamera from the man’s hands and threw it to the ground. The paparazzi yelled inprotest though the camera clicks and flashes continued. “I’ve told you once before! You come near any of friends or family—I will sue you for every penny you’vegot!”
“We’re just trying to find something about your life, Peeta!”The man leered at her husband before looking to her. “You’re a star! This isyour life! IT’S WHO YOU ARE!”
“Not even close,” Peeta yelled. “This is not who I am! I amthis woman’s husband and I am our future child’s father!”
Katniss listened to her husband’s impassioned response whenanother back pain seized her and she felt something shudder before releasing. Atrickle of liquid suddenly ran down her legs and she was grateful that she waswearing the rust-colored maxi-dress so no one could see.
She looked to her sister and then her friend. “My water justbroke.”
“Oh shit!” Johanna said, her eyes widening at the puddle. Shelooked over to the crowd. “Peeta!”
Her husband turned from the crowd just as Katniss doubledover. “KATNISS!”
She closed her eyes feeling the pain take over once more andwas surprised to feel her feet lift off the ground. Her eyes opened to see Peetaonce more staring down at her and she wrapped her arms around his neck.
“You broke that guy’s camera…”
Then, it all went black.

“The photographerClaudius Templesmith was taken into custody after cameras caught the man purposelyshoving Katniss Everdeen-Mellark, wife of Academy Award winner Peeta Mellark, in attempt to take a photo. Mellark, after rushing his wife toCedar-Sinai Hospital when she went into labor during the incident, pressedcharges against the infamous paparazzo…”
Katniss awoke to the news report and found herself on a plushhospital bed.
She looked around the sterile white hospital suite and her eyeszeroed in on the empty glass crib next to her.
“Don’t worry. He’s right here,” her husband’s soft voicesaid into her ear.
Turning, Katniss found Peeta sitting next to her, a gentlesmile on his face.
In his arms was the little bundle that she had spent twodays pushing out.
Sitting up, Katniss pressed her lips to their son’s darktuft of hair.
“Hello Ben…” She watched as her son’s eyes blinked rapidlyand his long, dark lashes fluttered before he fell back to sleep. “…you reallytired Mommy out.”
Peeta met her eyes and leaned over to kiss gently. “Thankyou.”
“For almost getting you arrested for assaulting someone?”
Her eyes went to the television where the scene of her near-fallplayed on E! News.
“Ten other reporters plus Johanna and Prim say otherwise,”he told her with a smile. “Johanna really pulled out the tears during hersegment with Oprah. Prim is with Effie at LAX to pick up your parents so they canmeet their first grandchild, Benjamin James Mellark.”
“B.J. Mellark…” Katniss chuckled as she laid her head on hisshoulder. “The press will have a field day with that.”
“Well after Effie stopped sobbing on Ben, she made anofficial statement to the press announcing his name and letting everyone knowthat though he was early, he is perfectly healthy,” her husband said. “Everyonegets the name references.”
Benjamin James had been the name of Peeta’s character in Second Chances, the movie that broughtthem together.
Her husband told her that the reporters had gobbled thestory up and that People Magazine andUS Weekly were having a bidding warfor the first pictures of Ben. There were reporters camped outside the hospitaland the entire floor had been on high security.
“I also had her tell the press something else,” Peetasuddenly said, his eyes on the little bundle wrapped in the custom-madespearmint colored wrap—a present from Cinna. “I’ll be taking a break fromacting to spend time with my family and to explore other projects.”
She caressed Ben’s cheek causing his lips to lift in asleeping smile. “For how long?”
Dipping down to brush his lips against hers, his answer waswhispered into her mouth before disappearing into their kiss.
“Indefinitely.”
FIN.
