From the small amount of information left about them from before the crusades, they were a trend in Japan going up too its destruction, inwhich fictional characters would “sing” robotic music (they were musical programs made with different tunes). This was a big deal, to the point where these vocaloids were treated more as artists themselves, getting entire venues sold out for their performances
Accordingly, one of them (a blue haired girl named Miku) was so influential she was not only the queen of Japan, but the world itself. However the validity of this claim is debated in my historical music spheres. This is most likely the miku you are speaking of, who got world famous during the early 2000’s (they were a invention of the new magical tech of the time)
I’m pretty sure even today there is a small cult following of this “queen” as occasionally new music using the vocaloid pops up within the music spheres. I can send you a few songs if you want
