it's a combination of dedication, opportunity, and luck, I believe.
like, I'm lucky that my favorite bands often come to my area. same with cons. and sometimes I just luck into things randomly/ on one occasion had a connection. and I lurk a lot but I'm not at the point where it doesn't feel weird and creepy anymore (usually) heh :D

yeah, fb is really usefull, my uni creates special groups by schoolyears and majors and everyone can post their questions or help and somebody will always answer and I wouldn’t get anywhere without it

facebook is also a good place to inform the uninformed too, like i have a facebook, there may be ignorant people there, but there are plenty of ignorant people here too

a lot of people are unaware about everything that's going on right now in the world, and if they are aware they're misinformed, so facebook is a great way to set things right
it's a great tool
tumblr can be really dangerous sometimes because people spread a lot of misinformation crazy quickly and then it gets out of hand and difficult to set things right
