can i ask what your writing process is like? not just for motdp, but for fics in general
executive dysfunction is kicking my ass so atm it’s mostly “sits around all day Wishing I Could Write yet Avoiding Writing by checking the same webpages and refreshin tumblr a hundred times” “opens file at two am” “stares guiltily until four am” “goes to bed.” :(
usually i get an idea, run a few scenes in my mind/roleplay them with myself in my room, then i need to tell my best friend/beta ALL ABOUT IT, she has ideas and comments of her own that i riff off of, i may or may not spam other people with the AMAZiNG IDEA
90% of the time those ideas never go anywhere. 50% of the time i still remmbmer to save them in a file for an eventual, improbable later. when i don’t it’s guaranteed i’ll be tormented by being unable to find them again and instead of just shrugging and inventing something else i’ll waste a good afternoon or three lamenting the Lost Idea. (it’s a brain technique to avoid writing while still feeling like i’m not avoiding writing DELIBERATELY. i would totally write if i had those notes!!!) (spoiler: i’d find something else to avoid writing with.)
so: you have this big file full of chaotic chatlogs, covering several possible plotlines that likely contradict each other but all have shiny bits that need to be written!!!.
so then sometimes i’ll try to be super responsible and write an actual list as a summary. 1) event A happens (a) this character feels that way about it because background here(b) there needs to be foreshadowing for moment 6.( c) what’s the apartment even look like??2) event B happens
etc, etc. a list done pre-writing is useful because if you keep it summarized enough (and keep the details farther down) you can have the whole of it under your eyes without having to scroll too much. AND when you figure out while detailing scene four that you need foreshadowng you can just go up the list and add another bullet point! super great for reordering scenes or moments too.
(so of course writing list is Like Work thereore to be avoided as long as possible, and also i often think "hey you know a list might help here” when i’ve aready plunged inside the fic head first because wheee what beautiful swimming weather and now i’m up to my ass in it and desperately trying to figure out the logical, structured way to get out of that particular swamp.)
you can have a list for the whole fic, and then make sub-lists for each separate scene, and basically if you’re inclined that way you could sub-list your way down until you’re pretty much just writing the actual prose. (i don’t because i’m an ~arteest, and i’m at heart messy and imposing order on my stuff is like pulling rotten teeth -- badly necessary but holy shit i am not gonna sit still and quiet for it.)
i usually start writing pretty late at night, like after midnight late, which is not because i’m more ~inspired~ but because i get tired enough that i self-doubt-censor myself less. it’s not a good habit because eventually i’m on a roll but my brain will not string two sentences together coherently because it’s four fucking am and i’m chronically sleep deprived, so i have to stop even tho at that point i don’t want to.
the more you write the easier it is to write so ideally if i could sit down and type straight away i’d… not have this problem ok never mind. but if you can start a routine of “at this hour i’ll write (small number of) words every (some number of) days” and keep to it you should see some nice improvement, even if you only write 500 words a week.
