Switched from the warehouse to a desk job as a proofreader at the same company. First day so far: I had to ask the front desk for help because no one told me where to go, and now I’m just sitting at a desk that’s not set up yet because the boss is out for the next several days.

I got the warehouse employee of the day at work today, which gives you a card that you can exchange for free food at the cafeteria. I was really excited because I do work hard (well, I get good results, at least) and this was a nice way to reward someone.

Sometimes I get chicken tenders or a burger here, but I had each of those the past two nights and was up sick all night, so those were out. They had a sign for chicken Marsala pasta, which is one of my favorite things that I haven’t had since leaving school, but they were all out. Almost every single thing in the fridge (food from previous days) had pork in it, which obviously I can’t have. So all I was able to walk away with was Spanish rice and a piece of rhubarb pie.

While I do wish I got more money with this—is it a promotion if you don’t get a raise? because it feels kind of like a promotion—I really am happy that my work recognized I’m good at what I do. A lot of people I know try to talk me into finding a different job since I went to college and am decently smart all that, but I legitimately like what I do and am perfectly glad to work here while I decide what I want to do in the future (if the military ends up not working out). I like sorting the orders, packing the small boxes on the conveyer, foaming the guitar boxes, even enjoy the basic box packing, which nobody believes when I tell them because everyone hates being a packer. Almost all my coworkers are friendly and I get along with nearly everyone. I’ve just never had a job that I really liked and especially have never been acknowledged for being a good employee before, so this is a really good feeling.

Today at work one of my supervisors said another guy and I were nominated to be new trainers for all the new people we’re hiring for the fourth quarter. They had a meeting about it with all the trainers and management from all areas of the warehouse, and they said everyone there was specially chosen for being really good at their job and motivated and positive and we’re people who really put the company in a good light. It was flattering and nice to hear and all, but I’m not exactly happy about getting new responsibilities without a pay raise.

I had to stay an hour and a half after work today because I refused to be false imprisoned (if you clocked out “early,” which was actually later than we were supposed to get out anyway, you were forced to go to a work party even though you were off the clock, and I was not going to have anything to do with work without getting paid after they pulled the rug out from under us like that). What was especially stupid was that only seven employees stayed rather than going to the party, so we got almost nothing done.

Even worse was I only ate a sandwich for breakfast and didn’t take a break the entire shift (my supervisor told us earlier we were technically allowed a half-hour, but that most people weren’t taking it since it was only supposed to be a six-hour shift, and by the time we learned it was a full eight hours or be forced to go to the party, there was no time left for a lunch break). So of the seven employees only six were useful, because instead of making a dent in the unshipped number, I was busy having a two hour long low blood sugar attack. (Towards the end I was stumbling around and slurring my speech and nearly collapsing every time I stood still; I wonder how it would have looked for them if one of their workers had fainted because of that bullshit.)
