Initially the team chose the topic of “Vagueness”, in which we created an experiment that related to time and the idea of capturing a current issue within different continents of the world. However this topic was changed after reflection on feedback that alerted us to the insensitivity of the way we were addressing and presenting these issues. As such, after significant brainstorming, the team decided to choose the topic “Documenting and Editing” as we felt more comfortable and able to design experiments that led to the final creation.
From the “Documenting and Editing” presentation, we chose the artwork of Meric Algun Ringborg - “The Library of Unborrowed books” - which was based on Section III at the SMSA Library Sydney in 2014. The aim of the artwork is to show library books that are still in use, compared to books which have been forgotten and unread/unused.
After looking into this artwork the team started the documenting and editing process by individually capturing photos, videos and sound recordings of various perspectives of used and unused books. Sam L and Sam M took photos and videos of various types of books, using video editing skills to piece together stop motion videos, collage videos and more. Meanwhile, Danae experimented with photoshop by creating memes that are a mockery of the word “book” being used for non-traditional devices such as “facebook”, etc, alongside manipulating other images based around the idea of erasing information, in relation to the notion of books being forgotten/becoming irrelevant due to the overbearing focus of the internet. Danae and Sam L also made a variety of sound recording of physical books, and of the word “book” in several different languages.
These documents were then uploaded to a google drive in which Alice, our editor, merged the files together into our final video.
