David Scott Parker will describe how the newly formed United States desperately needed direction and identity in the early 19th century and through the the work of landscape designer, Andrew Jackson Downing, and his friend and collaborator, the architect Alexander Jackson Davis, they ignited America’s interest in the Gothic style. It was Downing who promoted the idea that only “fitting, tasteful and significant dwellings” could establish the societal culture and order necessary to unify and improve the young nation. Typically, Gothic had been reserved for edifices of wealth and worship, but Downing and Davis made it available to fashionable, well-to–do members of the community.
