This is an incredible start to an interesting series. Issue #1 is a fast-paced work filled with character development and plot movement, yet still flows perfectly. The work is set in a dark, futuristic society where the production of art is illegal and punishable by death. Rather than a traditional police force, the rules are enforced by incredibly creepy spider-like robots; each with a monitor in place of a face and each monitor bearing the same smiling image. "The Tomorrows" are a group of self-called "artistic terrorists" who are fighting to keep art, and freedom, free. Our view into their world is through Zoey, an artist with a death warrant hanging over hear head when she is recruited by The Tomorrows.
The artwork is fantastic. Copland ensures that each member of the diverse cast's personality shows through each panel, and Metcalfe's stunning work on colours makes each page absolutely stunning. The series is slated to feature a different artist, with Alexis Ziritt on issue #2. The idea of a slight style change from issue to issue works well with the overall tone of the book, and I would love to see how the slight shift from issue to issue would look collected in a trade.
Pires built a fascinating world, and the use of social media as culture control is an interesting premise. The Tomorrows is definitely a series to pick up. It's available at your local comic shop today!
