Hi! 👋 I want to ask you how you feel about Tomb Raider: The Myth of El Hawa? 🏜️

I'm very happy it got made and it's so beautiful, but the story is to close to La(ra)wrence of Arabia for me? It's not bad, just not very original 🤷‍♀️

(I'm also glad Lara didn't become leader of the tribe, that would make it very corny and her into white-savior 😂)

Yeaaahhh now it's when you send me to hell because I've absolutely not watched it before due to.... personal hectic life. In fact I've watched it just now and only because you asked me to. I'm really sorry for it because my dearest @adayka who has done so much for me and my fanfics worked in this project. But you can tell how personally and mentally exhausted I've been these last years that even if I reblogged and shared the shit outta this project when it came out, I didn't take the time to watch it myself, until now.

Here I leave the thing for if someone else wants to enjoy it:

I've enjoyed it a lot, for sure. I mean, the team is a full brick of talents: Murti, who's a skilled and gifted writer, Jasmine, who has nothing to envy to TR official comic artist when it comes to draw Lara, and of course, Jonell's voice is THE voice for me. Dean Kopri is also fantastic in putting music to all this beauty.

Yet, as you say, the plot isn't original enough. It follows loyally the original idea it existed for the link between The Last Revelation and The Angel of Darkness. Most of us have used it for our fanfics. And the fact it resembles so much Lawrence of Arabia is rightfully pointed out by yourself because even Core team, back in those days, called this plot Lara of Arabia. So they themselves were the first to acknowledge it was deeply inspired in this story.

As for the plot itself, I've enjoyed it but I don't feel particularly taken away for it. The white traveler being sheltered by a POC tribe and later accepted as one of them and initiated in their lore is old as fuck and as you well say, it stinks of white saviour-ism. Efforts have been made here to disclaim it, such as Lara acknowledging that the tribe didn't need her to survive, and the fact you point out, that she finally leaves before turning herself into a leader or something.

Only she HAS turned a leader, commanding expeditions of fighters to defend the people until she's nicknamed El Hawa. It also mentions her wearing blue as a special color to distinguish her, when, in fact, blue is the traditional colour Tuaregs - not Bedouins - use in the desert of Sahara.

It is also unclear why Putai is a black woman if the Bedouins are Arabs, and thus, not black. But that's a mystery that goes back to 2003, right?

In the end, I find it quite enjoyable and we should be grateful fans and former TR members cared enough for us to bring forth this little jewel, but I'm afraid it will just be a passing thing as it happens with everything TRAOD related. Also, as a way of filling the void between TR4 and TR6, it fits a bit distorted, since it would need more fleshing out and completing to fit properly in the rest of the lore - why would she go to Von Croy in Paris if, as she claimed, she cared little anymore about it and was instead anguished to find out what happened to Putai and her people? It just doesn't make sense. Moreover, you can see that's not her attitude in TRAOD at all. But yet again... undevelopment. On the game's part, of course.

Thanks for putting me into watching this, as I had forgotten I had it on my pending tasks. And don't mind the English, for mine isn't perfect either.

That what you did here with the last page, I made with @positivelyamazonian sketchbook (i made one from kurtis based on her ff) i guess the paper was thicker but i used coffee and wine for it and if it’s copy paper i guess it will work (ofc 1. test the ink reaction with a bit water, 2. thin paper, not too much liquid, you can always repeat) and you could burn it a bit at the edges “a bit” keep attention �� also and you could put some “dirt” on it��.I guess with these things you will not destroy it

you can smear the whole page with coffee and a few extra rings on it, the page will turn golden yellow and smell good, and it will curl �� if you have tested the reaction of the ink, if the ink smeers, i would use only the dirt/burn and only single coffee/wine cup rings :3

The sketchbook you made for positivelyamazonian looked great and the worn look was what I was expecting from this. I think the sketchbook you used did have heavier paper and could handle a little weathering from some liquids.  I actually did a test with a print of the journal using some very watered down gouache and I burned the edges. It turned out pretty good (see below) but I’m not sure if I want to do it to the journal or not. I’m not sure the paper can completely handle it, especially if I don’t go in with a plan. 

But thank you for letting me know how you achieved the effect! :D

I think I need to see a doctor or something because I physically cried and got excited at the sight of these! Oh my god they are just beautiful, like they are simply stunning @adayka, how do you do it?! They arrived today and at the perfect time too, really boosted my mood 🤗 the chocolates will noy survive the night 🤫

I think my dad has fallen in love with it too, though had to hide the naughty kurtis x-mas print before he saw it!! 😂 Thank you ever so much for blessing me and everyone else with your art!! 💕

Words can’t describe how happy I am so have these pieces, as well as excited for them to come. I was somewhere between the ages of four and ten when I was first introduced to Tomb Raider. It was Angel of Darkness specifically that was my first taste not only in the Tomb Raider franchise, but also video games as a whole. Which is why it is so important to me. Not only for these reasons but also because this game is one of the fondest moments I have sharing with my dad. I can’t remember having a lot but this will always one of them.

He used to play video games on his computer. Things like Max Payne and Serious Sam, but it was Lara who stuck out to me the most. I though she was so cool back then scaling buildings and wearing a jean jacket, not to mention running from the police for wanted murder. I used to always come home and ask my dad to play it so I could watch him. Soon, he let me play it too and watching him would always help me what to do, and if I ever needed my dad’s help passing a certain point he’d do it. Then continue to play for thirty minutes. And if he needed help passing a level I would take over. I probably spent most of my free time on the computer playing that game. The only thing I couldn’t stand was that I had a very irrational fear of falling in the dark in the game. It would scare me and so stupidly I told my dad this once and he never let me forget it.

I wanted to be Lara when I grew up. I wanted to be like her and do what she did. Years later my Grandmlther told me being archeologidt was really like that. It crushed my little soul. I would even pretend I was Lara and still do—in the stupidest ways like when I bend down to pick something up or when I’m running up stairs. No, I couldn’t have been interesting like buryning things in the backyard and turning it into some great exposition, I wanted to be the one wanted for a murder she didn’t commit. Classic.

When Anniversary rolled around my dad and I played that. I listened to him once call Lara a “dumb broad” when he would miss a jump. And when it was my turn I’d call her a “stupid bitch.” Lara you still my girl.

When I got my first and only set of straight A’s I asked my dad for Legend. Which might possibly be my second favourite game. It is also the first in the franchise I finished. The second was Underworld. 

I’ve also read most of the old comics, which I love and still own. Back when they were in black and white. Shamelessly, I would taken them to school and colour in them. I used to think it made me badass, but now I know it’s never badass to destory literature. Unless you’re Lara Croft.

I’ve played the new games and I love them. They’ll never be the classics but that is what makes them great. Lara’s story told as a survivalist rather then an archaeologist. The fact that they give you an AOD skin make the games more thrilling. Yet, unfortunately my dad never played them. He was very burnt out from working and didn’t have the time. When “Rise” came around for the computer I purchased it but unfortunately it was around this time last year when my dad had a heart attack and despite doing everything to save him it was too late. But before he was gone he was in a coma in ICU. I had brought my computer in to play but couldn’t bring myself to do it knowing my dad wouldn’t be able to see me or play it himself.

In short, Angel of Darkness was an important piece of my childhood. It was one of my first loves and one of my best memories. I wish I could thank my dad for such a wonderful gift.
