How to Not Be Annoying - Part 1 Interrupting
Growing up, ADHD people hear that some of our traits are annoying so often, it can cause social anxiety that lasts a lifetime. I’m breaking up these habits, and how to slightly change them for the better, into a several part series.
We interrupt people while they’re talking. This is even a question you might have been asked during the diagnosing process - “Do you often find yourself interrupting during conversations?” It’s not that we’re rude, or that we think what the other person is saying is unimportant. It’s that our minds work so fast, we’ve already filled in the end of their sentences and are excited to respond. Here are a few tips to break that habit:
First, become self aware. That’s always the first step! Notice if this is something you do, and when you do it.
Next, get in the habit of pausing before answering anything. I feel like I’m holding the answer in my mouth. I will silently count, hold my breath or do a controlled exhale to help keep my brain busy and mouth shut while I’m listening to the person finish what they are saying.
Eventually you will start doing this unconsciously and break the habit.
For a level up, give yourself a 1 count pause before replying. It gives the other person the extra feeling that you were actively listening, and formulating your response after they spoke, as opposed to waiting for them to finish speaking just so you can talk.
For yourself (as a general self confidence tip) feel encouraged to call people out when they interrupt you. I will say any of the following “Oh, I wasn’t done speaking.” or “Wait, I am going to quickly finish my point.” or even “Please stop interrupting me, and allow me to speak.” depending on how forceful or rude they are acting.
These are some techniques that have worked for me - comment or send me a DM if you have any other great suggestions that have worked for you!
