Blackadder's A Christmas Carol • Review

No humbugger

A blatant reversal of the Dickens tale, the story features Mr. Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) as a humble shopkeeper who, unlike his ancestors, graciously donates money and goods to all who come knocking at his door. Like all Blackadders, he employs a dimwitted clerk named Baldrick (Tony Robinson) who, despite his inability to spell, nevertheless points out the flaws in his boss's overly gullible nature. On Christmas Eve, Blackadder receives a certain ghostly visitor (played by Robbie Coltrane, already looking like Hagrid two decades before his time). The apparition at first says he is there by mistake, since Blackadder is already good, but lets drop that his ancestors were not of the same moral fortitude. Blackadder convinces him to tell him about his corrupt forebears, and slowly sees that evil can have its upside. The audience can quickly tell where this is headed, but the premise is executed so brilliantly that one can excuse its overly telegraphed set-up.

Miranda Richardson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie return as Queen Elizabeth I, Lord Melchett and Prince George respectively for the scenes of Christmas past. (They also feature in an amusing science fiction scene too funny to ruin here.)  In addition to fantastic performances from the returning ensemble, guest stars Miriam Margolyes and Jim Broadbent (who additionally cameo-ed together in in an episode of the first series) play loony, cuddly versions of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Atkinson again shines in his leading role, deftly insulting those around him even while portraying a “nice” version of his iconic character.

If you've already watched, or are watching, this epic series, or just want to see an amusing twist on the classic tale, now is the perfect time of year to catch this hilarious send-up of a literary staple. B+
