Paying attention to every work detail, attending all meetings, contributing to various projects effectively, being motivated at work and all associated with productivity are fantastic. But there's a level that can signify you’re addicted to work.

I receive a monthly newsletter from one of these associations in my field, and as has always been the case in the past few months, not a single job ad has been in it in February. I should really keep track of how often they actually have an opening. And have had an opening in the past three years or so. Instead of jobs, there are tons of conferences and calls for papers steadily urging us to do more. More overhours, more investment, more more more more.
I should rationalize the absence of jobs in a way - as in being able to tell myself that since there are no jobs I have done nothing wrong, and I am not a failure because I didn’t land a position.
But nevertheless, I still have a nagging voice inside of me that is telling me I could have tried harder, could have published more, could have gone to more conferences...
I think academia has set me in a position where work is my addiction. I feel guilty when I don’t work because maybe I will land a job if one opens up and I have worked more than anyone else... Ugh. Stop. There are no jobs.
