Down with the Sickness
Every night brought new things to the table. Atticus knew this was why he loved his work. For being the largest man in the hospital he was probably the one that cared more than any other employee. It was presumptuous but he did care. He had the chance to listen to the patients and really tend to their needs. Margot rolled her eyes whenever Carney asked for only purple crayons, but Atticus gladly pulled all the other colors out because one, it made the old man happy and two, it stopped the yelling. Simple things. That was Atticus's way of thinking. Besides Margot was a cunt.
Earlier in the evening, a new patient was brought in. He read her file and familiarized himself with her case. Having criminally convicted crazies, as they were deemed by the state, as your caseload meant you needed to pay close attention to triggers and ticks. Addison Rollins was being placed under state care for killing her father. Or so everyone thought. Testimony stated that she repeatedly claimed her innocence but her lawyer stated she was afraid because she'd caught the girl talking to her dead father in an empty room.
Facts: Addison Rollins talked to the dead. That did not make her a murderer and she was being remanded more because of her mental state than whether or not she killed the man who raised her. Patricide wasn't new in a place like Bedford. Her case file also had testimony from siblings all saying she hated the man but would never kill anyone. They were so close, in fact, all three siblings - two brothers and a twin, stepped forward and claimed to kill the man. They all hated him and all had legitimate reasons. The problem was Addison was the one who found him. She was a mental case when the cops arrived and eventually the courts would say she was too unstable to live beyond the walls of Bedford Sanitarium.
She was alone in the game room waiting for Atticus to come escort her to her bed. He gathered up the clothing she'd need and the bedding. Every bed had sheets but blankets and pillows weren't dispensed until arrival. The young woman sat in a chair wearing a prison-issued gown and a long sweater. She looked like she'd been crying. "Hey there. Name's Atticus. Some folks call me Everest, you can guess why. I'm gonna show you to your room, okay? Do you have any questions for me?"
