Star Trek is my oldest fandom, insomuch as I started caring about Star Trek when I was an infant, and even though it hasn't always been my #1 fandom it was alway there for me. Being a Trekkie felt like being part of something special, that was simultaneously exclusive and welcoming. When I didn't have friends in "real life" who shared my interests, Star Trek fandom was one of a few fandoms I could turn to for like-minded conversations and FEELS.

They say "it gets easier"

I think that's complete bullshit

I don't think loss ever gets easier

I think after each heart ache you just push the pain further down.

all the words you have to describe the pain in your chest, the weight in your heart and mind, the sense of helplessness, madness, anxiety, they all just wither away as you push them deeper and deeper.

and then no one knows that you're fighting a daily battle

until you collapse.

There are good days. there are good weeks. periods of time where the pain won't weigh on you, where you can forget it or put it out of your mind and enjoy things, breathe easier. 

but sometimes it become a manic roller-coaster.

one day spent in bed listless and despondent with eyes heavy and fogged. the next spent laughing easily aware and energized.

and when you do have a day where their memory isn't fresh in your mind  you may feel ashamed, as though you are disrespecting that person's memory. forgetting the pain just to focus on yourself and get on with your life.

those who care for you will tell you that's ridiculous, that the person you loved would have wanted you to get along and just be happy.

but it's hard. it's hard to know what to feel. how to react. to be strong for those around you and keep calm and smile so as to not make anyone uncomfortable.

everyone deals with these things differently.

I know many people who have to fill their days with tasks and routines so as to not allow themselves to dwell on their pain.

I wish I had that drive. but I just sink into myself and avoid things. and when it gets to be too much I just cut off completely and chose to not think at all.

I've lost my sister, I'm losing my grandfather.

my sweet amazing friend who never seems weak or unhappy is enduring the gradual loss of her grandmother.

everyone everywhere will lose someone they love and care for.

It's hard not to lose yourself as well.

Howl's Moving Castle: additional comments

Two parts in the book stood out to me that I wanted to mention:

1) Refering to this post: The first line reads:

In the land of Ingary, where such things as seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility really exist...

And I said to myself (and then scrawled in the margins), "There's a cloak of invisibility, so this shit must be good. 

2) During the exchange between Howl and Sophie at the end of Chapter Six, Howl perfectly embodies the "Nice Guy" phenomenon that is such a huge issue at present:

"She's the most beautiful girl there ever was in these parts," Howl went on mournfully. "I love her so dearly, but she scorns my deep devotion and gets sorry for another fellow. How can she have another fellow after all this attention I've given her? They usually get rid of the other fellows as soon as I come along."

Sophie's sympathy shrank quite sharply.... "Then why don't you feed the girl a love potion to get it over with?" she said. 

"Oh no," said Howl. "That's not playing the game. That would spoil all the fun." 

Sophie's sympathy shrank again. A game, was it?

There Howl is, with that ever-present problem: I've been so nice to the girl, given her attention and compliments, so why won't she love me? How could she love someone else instead when I am clearly the best? He pays no mind to the girl's actual wants, treats the entire attempt to win Lettie's love as a game, and yet is put out simply because he can't win. 

Nice Guy dilemma, all neatly wrapped up in a few paragraphs. 

(Not to say I hate Howl, I truly do love the guy, but he can be such a douche sometimes. Like then.)
