Gone to Color feat. Ade Blackburn - “Illusions”
Beyond having a keen sense of texture and feeling for the flow of experimental electronic music into emotion, Tyler Bradley Walker and Matt Heim’s intuition has led them to collaborating with some of the more complimentary voices in leading up to their self-titled debut as Gone to Color. We’ve already heard the way Jessie Stein of the Luyas has embellished a brightness in existential illumination on “The 606″ and Merchandise’s Carson Cox merge this energy onto an even more enveloping plane with the guitar-pop disintegration of “Voyeur Nation”.
The album’s latest preview pulls itself away from that gravity, however, in the digital fissures of “Illusions”. Joined on this go by Ade Blackburn of art-punk greats Clinic, the collaboration is an invitation that isn’t exactly what it seems. “What an illusion, just an illusion to enjoy / In the wiles, to the gills / Openings for you, openings for me to enjoy,” Blackburn sings, though the trepidation in his voice over the listen’s cool, wading eventually falls through a collapsed wall of rock, ceding its original form.
