The Principle of Balance in A Deadly Education
Orion says it's just a theory, but we are inclined to agree (from the book) that El's world depends heavily upon the Principle Of Balance. The amount of Mana and Malia the wizards create and destroy balances each other out so that there isn't an excess of either. The school attacks El in such ways so that she gives in and goes evil sooner or later, it’s tiring her out and when Orion is saving his classmates, he's inadvertently increasing the number of mals in the graduation hall and they get hungrier by the day, but you know that since you've read the book lol.
Anyway, here's something I found interesting-
"...eighteen years ago—which I’m sure was not coincidentally near when Orion was conceived—only a dozen students came out, and they were all gone dark. They’d banded into a pack and taken out all the rest of the seniors in their year for a massive dose of power."
So, by the time the Hands of Death graduated, they had to have killed more than a thousand students in their senior class (that's assuming they didn't go after the younger kids too) This led to an insane malia overload. Obviously, this won't be acceptable according to the Principle, so to counteract that much malice- it led to Orion Lake, a wizard who would grow up to be so powerful that he can suck mana out of maleficaria and store it for the next kill, (the Universe is tripping at this point bc this is a massive gamble on its side, but the malia the Hands of Death generated was too great to think about repercussions I guess) So, our hero is a foil for a dozen mass-murdering maleficers. The Universe was just patting itself on the back for its ingenious idea, but then this happened.
"Of course, the families of all the other students realized what had happened—because it was stupidly obvious; the idiots hadn’t let the enclave kids escape first—and hunted the dozen maleficers down. The last one of them was dead by the time Mum graduated the following year, and that was that for the Hands of Death or whatever they called themselves."
If all the 12 maleficers were dead within the next school year, taking all their newly acquired malia with them (Especially when the Maleficers didn't pay their due for the malia they used which was abruptly extinguished by the enclaves (the dues a maleficer has to pay- you know, the usual ripping one's body inside out over the course of several years)) There is now another deficit on the balancing scale. Only this time, it's the mana that's in excess. In whom you might ask? Orion, who wasn't even born yet, whose sole purpose until then was to thwart the after-effects of the Hands of Death, was now left unchecked in all his maleficaria sucking glory. Universe, who's to balance him out now?
We know that, El was conceived 3 months before that year's graduation so the timeline backs me, because that was most likely the time when the Enclaves destroyed the last Maleficer of the bunch. El, who is destined to lay waste to multitudes, has an affinity for Death and Destruction, can kill a maw mouth with so little mana.
What I'm saying is that El and Orion were born to stabilize excess on the other side of the magical scale. Whatever prophetic aspect they take on later is purely coincidental imo. Talk about a power couple amirite?
