Nothing else on Steve McQueen sounds like “Faron Young,” making it a strange choice for the opening track of Prefab Sprout’s second, and finest, album. A Fairlight-sampled banjo that rolls in and out of the bridge gives the impression of parody, but there is something too sinister, and even trippy, about the track for it to be dismissed as such. Additionally, it is the most lyrically oblique song on the 1985 album. The band’s principal songwriter, Paddy McAloon, sings, “I’ve lost just what it takes to be honest.” The lyric can be taken literally as a comment on a romantic relationship—Steve McQueen is above all an album about infidelity and dishonesty—but it reads just as well as one on his relationship to pop music.

Doing his best Hunter S. Thompson impersonation, John Fell Ryan is followed by a lone camcorder as he wanders through the living detritus that is Las Vegas. A traipse across a highway and through a casino is the perfect visual accompaniment to this Excepter dirge, or rather, this song is the ultimate alienated soundtrack to late capitalism's Mecca. Either way, when the climax distorts and the fast cuts kick in, you feel just like you're in Vegas, which is to say full of anxiety, yet empty of the will to continue living. This is the second taste of new Excepter material as of late, and the taste is good.

A few things...
Today my 300th post on Refinery29 went up – a review of Drake's "HYFR" and the accompanying video, which was rife with all types of bar mitzvah bacchanalia. It's been more than a year since I started writing reviews, features, interviews, and roundups for Refinery, and it feels pretty good.
I also posted a premiere today at International Tapes for Recycle Culture's remix of Korallreven's "Sa Sa Samoa [feat. Julianna Barwick]". Before getting into the review I went over some problems I've had with the whole music journolist discussion surrounding "EDM," which will probably be all I ever say about the matter. The track itself is straight-up progressive trance.
AdHoc.fm launched today. As a fan of all the blogs involved, I'm pretty exciting to see how it progresses, and hopefully I'll be contributing in the future. I know they've been working really hard on this for quite some time.
