faceclaim : Fionn Creber
appearance :
Kyle has fair skin, with sandy freckles that darken across his face and body during the summer. There’s a distinct sharpness to his face: high cheekbones, strong brow and angular jaw contribute to an almost gaunt appearance. His eyes are an indecisive mix between green and brown, lined fair lashes, and tend to betray whatever emotion he’s trying to hide. His relaxed lips seem to be perpetually bordering on a sneer, and when he smiles his mouth just widens, as opposed to turning up at the corners. He’s self-conscious about his ears, because he thinks they stick out a little too far.
Kyle puts a lot of effort into his appearance, although he likes to pretend that he doesn’t. He has an elaborate combination of products which keeps his hair mostly under control: full and curly on the top and shaved short on the sides. His sense of style aligns with the more casual elements of dark academia: sweaters and turtlenecks, plaid or corduroy pants, and trench coats. He usually dresses in greens or browns, which are his favourite colours. He wears round gold wire glasses.
personality :
Kyle likes to think of himself as an acquired taste. Bitter, earthy, with a slightly sour aftertaste. He’s held onto that sense of self-righteousness and desire for justice that he had as a kid, but has largely dropped the act of pursuing it. After failure after failure, he’s become disillusioned and cynical, and has resolved to simply not care about anything anymore. Unfortunately, he’s not very good at that, so all he has left is to claim that he doesn’t care, whilst quietly stewing in his anger. In truth, Kyle wants nothing more than to be proved wrong, for someone to demonstrate that there is hope left in this world after all, but so far he’s never been convinced.
Whilst he may come across as blunt and unpleasant as a first impression, Kyle can be a great friend when he’s decided you’re worth the effort. He’s fiercely loyal and does his best to empathise with your troubles, even if his advice is often unsolicited. He’ll work with you to help you achieve your goals, and he’ll openly loathe anyone who opposes you. But he’s not afraid to call you out on your bullshit, either, and tends to favour truth over kindness.
history :
Kyle’s parents got divorced when he was twelve, which was a traumatic event, but ultimately for the best. He lives with his mother - who has since mellowed out - and Ike, but he refuses to speak to his father. Kyle planned on becoming a politician when he was younger, but given his growing disillusionment with the US Political system, he decided in freshman year of high school that journalism was more his thing. He’d like to become editor of his own independent socialist newspaper one day, but he feels that in reality he’ll probably be stuck writing clickbait Buzzfeed articles for the rest of his life. Kyle’s core friendship group has mostly stayed the same over the years (largely because he’s not good at making new friends). But he cut all ties with Cartman at the start of high school, and still refuses to acknowledge him. It upsets him that people are still friendly to him, and don’t see his antisemitism and bigotry as anything other than a funny little quirk.
Unlike most of his peers, Kyle has never been in a relationship. Not in elementary school, not in middle school, and certainly not in high school. He’s never been invited on a date, he’s never been asked to a dance–or even asked to dance. He claims that he’s not bothered by this, and that he doesn’t have the time or energy for a relationship anyway. But he’s actually incredibly self-conscious about his inexperience, and it’s led to a number of deep-rooted insecurities. Despite presenting himself as confident, Kyle sees himself as generally ‘undesirable,’ and thus won’t seek out new friendships or social situations without being dragged there, and cannot for the life of him pick up on signs that someone might be flirting. He’s been harbouring a small but bothersome crush on his best friend, Stan, since the age of thirteen, which rears its ugly head at the most inconvenient of times. He can’t quite manage to kick, no matter how hard he tries.
writing sample :
With all of his friends in class, Kyle spent his free period on a Tuesday in the school library. He was struck, as always, by the vague sense of disappointment as he walked through the doors. Harsh lighting, metal shelves, the voices of his loathsome peers as they whispered loudly across the room. It was an undeniably sub-par environment, just like everything else in South Park. He could not wait for the day that this all became an undeniably sub-par memory instead.
He wandered the isles until he came to the classics section. In the mood to revisit old favourites, he pulled a few off the shelf: Frankenstein, Of Mice and Men, Maurice. Satisfied, he set off in search of a private corner to read undisturbed in, and in doing so, he passed the YA fiction display. A book caught his eye, its cover depicting two teenage boys exchanging a brooding gaze. Kyle deviated from his path to inspect it, taking care to adopt a look of mild disgust, so that anyone who catches him wasting his time with this trashy stuff would know that he was doing so ironically. He pushed his glasses up his nose and scanned the blurb. A dystopian Romeo and Juliet style romance about two ‘chosen one’ boys. Can you get any more cliche? Kyle thought, rolling his eyes, before quietly slipping it into his chosen pile of books and carrying it with him to the check out. Ironically, of course.
headcanons :
Kyle’s never officially ‘come out’ as gay, but there’s an unspoken understanding amongst all South Park residents that he is. His mother is very supportive and an enthusiastic ally, which he finds embarrassing, but knows it’s better to be the alternative.
He’s got a shitty immune system and seasonal allergies, which means he’s frequently ill. But he prefers to suffer in silence, carrying on as though nothing was wrong, and resisting anyone else’s attempts to take care of him.
When flustered, he will default to disdain to cover up his true feelings. However, a tell-tale sign that someone’s got to him is the reddening of the tips of his ears.
He’s applied to a few English universities, hoping to study Journalism there. Despite claiming to hate South Park and everything in it, he’s actually intimidated by ‘the great unknown’ outside it, and doesn’t adjust well to change, so is secretly incredibly nervous by the prospect of life beyond high school.
Along with being unable to interpret flirting or romantic signals, he sometimes misunderstands offers of friendship as people just wanting something from him, and as such will be surprised and flattered when people refer to him as a friend, even if they have known each other for years.
He’s grappled with anxiety since middle school, but has generally learned to cope with it. He feels embarrassed about his panic attacks and tries to hide them because he knows they’re not rational.
