Abigail, or Abbie as she is usually known grew up in Aldridge Bay with her parents and older brother. She was smart, pretty and popular and had a pretty good life all things considered.
When she reached around sixteen she began to change. She made friends with an older crowd and discovered the fun that could be had with alcohol and late night parties on the beach. She began to date a boy a few years older than her against her parents wishes. Abbie was convinced it was true love and she was soon in deep with him and his friends. Her parents despaired as she began to skip classes and come home later and later.
The turning point though was the night when her parents received a phone call from the hospital at three in the morning. Abbie, her boyfriend and two friends had been drinking when they decided to take a drive and the car had gone off the road. Thankfully no one had been seriously hurt but three things happened that night. First Abbie got a real fright and realised that not only did her supposed boyfriend not really care for her but that she did not want to waste her life like that. Second her parents took a very harsh view of her behavior and she found her freedom very restricted for a long time and finally as she laid in hospital waiting for her parents to collect her and worried about whether she was going to get in trouble with the police, including her brother, she looked at the doctors in a very different light. Something changed that night and by the time her hangover cleared the next day she knew what she had to do.
Abbie calmed right down and focused on her studies. She rarely went out beyond school and certainly was not going to let anything as dumb as a relationship distract her from her studies anymore. She had decided she wanted to be a doctor and she needed to make up for the time she had wasted. Abbie was devastated to be waitlisted for two medical schools and was on the point of giving up when an offer came in for Denver, Colorado.
She worked hard, her focus totally on her goal of becoming a doctor. Once she graduated she returned home to Aldridge Bay and was able to join the medical team at the health centre. It took her a few years to gradually ease into life back in the town and particularly begin to relax again after so many years focused on studying but now she is enjoying life again and loves being a doctor.
What is their opinion about the boardwalk and it’s effect on the town? Abbie has fond memories of the boardwalk as a child and feels it would be a real shame for the town if it closed.
