Hi, you can call me Calvin. I'm willing to speak to whoever. Recently one of my friends' panic attacks have been coming back and I happened to be there with them during one. I just sat there, and I feel so bad since I don't know what to do. They said me being there helped, but what more can I do to help?
Hey Calvin, it’s Charlie!
That’s so nice of you to help a friend go through a panic attack, which can often times be really, really scary. Honestly, you being there can be an assurance that they’re going to be okay and that they’re going to get through this and that’s usually enough. But if you would like, you can always ask them if it’s okay to touch them and rub their back or shoulders, hold their hand, tell them that’s going to be okay, that kind of reassuring stuff. Help them focus on their breathing, four counts in, four counts out. Check in with them after, see if they’re doing okay. Make sure they eat a little something after or even a sip of water because the attacks can be really draining.
The thing about a panic attack is that they don’t know if they’re going to get through it, you know? <3 But with some convincing from great friends like you, they’re going to be just fine. <3
