I would like to thank the Academy for bringing this little cat person into my life two weeks ago.

He showed up on my neighbor’s doorstep on the night before the Academy Awards—a night when it was about 5 degrees (Fahrenheit) outside.

My neighbor handed the little guy off to me (because I have utterly failed to hide my secret cat lady identity).

The kitty was hungry, half frozen, injured from fighting to survive on the street, and yet incredibly sweet and gentle.

He patiently waited for me to bring him inside, though he was too cold to even shiver. He seemed absolutely confident that he had found the address he was looking for and was just politely allowing me a moment to realize it too.

Of course, I knew immediately he was right, but I tried to play it cool at first. I got him inside, fed him, and cleaned him up. I posted the “Found Cat” alerts, contacted the police and animal control, and waited the requisite 10 days for someone to claim him.

His name is now Oscar, and he is home.

I would also like to thank my good neighbors for this prize, also Wood Lake Vet Hospital, Lyndale Vet Hospital, the local police, my Mom, and Pat—who I suspect had some hand in this from the other side.

I’m not done! Most of all, I want to thank my cat-son, Zeus for patiently enduring this new whirlwind in his life. And my beloved cat-daughters who have passed, Sweet Pea and Gracie, for leading Oscar home.
