We did our spring cleaning, we’ve had our summer spruce up, now it’s time to freshen up for fall! Mount Rainier Volunteers will be conducting the last Adopt-A-Highway litter Patrol along SR 706 between Mile Posts 2 and 4 on September 14th, 2019 at 10am. If you are interested in joining us please email [email protected] and we will send you information on meeting location as well as a safety video required by the state to watch before hand (it’s rather entertaining). Come enjoy a cool fall morning and help us make the drive into the park as enjoyable as possible for visitors and staff.

Mount Rainier National Park's fantastic volunteers collected a remarkable 17 bags of trash along the two-mile stretch of SR 706 between mileposts 2-4 on April 27. Traditionally, that's our biggest patrol of the year. However, with rising numbers of people visiting the Park and the surrounding community, more litter has already accumulated. We'd like to put on our best face for visitors as they arrive for the Fourth of July weekend, so we'll be having a "tidying-up" event on June 22. It's almost time for our first Adopt-a-Highway litter patrol of the year. As you may recall, Mount Rainier National Park has an agreement with WSDOT to pick up litter along the section of SR 706 between mileposts 2 and 4. Their rules require us to make a pickup in April in conjunction with Earth Day; our remaining two patrols occur in late June or early July, and again in September.

The April pickup is always the biggest one of the year. Over the winter, there has been a substantial accumulation of litter along the roadside, so we're hoping for a large volunteer turnout. We have space for 12 people. The date is Saturday, April 27. If you can come, please email [email protected] before April 15 for further details.

2018 marks the fifth year Mount Rainier volunteers will be cooperating with the state Dept. of Transportation's Adopt-a-Highway program. Our first patrol of the season is always conducted in April as part of Earth Day efforts across the country. This year's opener has been scheduled for Sunday, April 15. We will gather at Park Headquarters (Tahoma Woods) at 10 AM, and if we have enough participants, the job can be done in just a couple of hours. The Park will provide long-armed grabbers, bags and gloves, but participants should bring water and snacks, and dress according to the weather. It's time for our last Adopt-a-Highway cleanup for 2017! Once again, we will be patrolling the stretch of SR 706 East between mileposts 2-4, including the frontage for the Park's Tahoma Woods headquarters. The date is September 16 (Saturday), and we'll be gathering in front of the T-Woods Administration Building at 10 AM.

Although our party size is limited to 12 by the State, we seldom have a full roster. Depending on how many volunteers we have, the job should take no more that 2-3 hours.  If you have not participated in this activity before, you will need to watch the DoT's training video at  http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/operations/adoptahwy/video.htm
