Please enjoy some background on the Inquisitor for a fan made comic bewteen @apudpir8 a fantastic artist as shown above, and me the script writer. You can find the fan made Adoribull Comic in the link along with the Inquisitor Athlen. Without further ado enjoy getting to know Athlen more :)

Athlen is a nonbinary city-ish elf. They’re kind of tall for their kind but not massively tall like Iron Bull. Basically, if you asked them to reach something from the top cabinet, they might have to stretch a bit but they wouldn’t need a stepping stool to do it. They have been a city elf for most of their life, they are not Dalish at all. No shoes when walking on the sharp pointy ground doesn’t make them think the Dalish are all that smart, to begin with. They don’t dislike the Dalish they just think some things they do are stupid, like not wearing shoes.

However, when they were younger think toddler age, they use to be in a clan with Dalish they just don’t remember it clearly. But humans are a bunch of assholes so traders infiltrated their clan annihilated the elders and older members that fought and sold the young elves off as slaves to everywhere you can imagine, mostly Tevinter.

Their parents were smart though. They knew they wouldn’t survive the attack so they hide Athlen in a hollowed-out tree. Covered it with debris and made it look like something had fallen over it. Athlen was told to not make a peep until it was perfectly quiet. So once the traders had ransacked and massacred their people and left. They decide they want to get out of the hollow tree and call for help. But wouldn’t you know it toddlers don’t have good muscle mass and pushing something that weighs like a dresser is impossible. Days pass and they smell the death and decay all around them. They’re starving when they hear a group of scavengers looting the dead. They call for help and are rescued by these scavengers which just happen to be bandits.

The bandits become their family, and family is used very loosely in that they use this toddler elf as a distraction to steal in the city. Unfortunately, bandit law is to look after only yourself so eventually Athlen now a child is captured and placed in an alienage.

They hate it.

The matron of the orphanage is human so they can come and go as they please in the orphanage and pretty much treats the elf orphans as trash. No one ever wants an elf child so they grow up and are in the matron's eyes a waste of space and money. So the older ones she sells to traders when she’s used them as much as she can or if they are just too much of a burden. The other older ones she sells as “exotic elf” lovers for people that want to take a walk on the “wild side”.  Add in the fact she barely feeds them and abuses them for her pleasure or if she’s just in a bad mood and you have a place even poor Annie would feel that the orphanage is rainbows and unicorns.

While in this orphanage Athlen learns a few things such as trying to escape is futile, they get beaten often, they lose a friend to betrayal, and eventually kill the matron in her sleep. Of course, they steal all her coins and escape but not without leaving the murder weapon in their ex-friend’s bed you know for revenge.

So about this time they’re like a teen to 20s and have no clue what to do cause all their life, it’s been steal, kill, maim, repeat. They decide mercenary work sounds like a good fit. So she joins this mercenary group and grows and hones their skills better and better over the years. They kind of become their family but Athlen is still wary of them having learned not to trust. Eventually, this mercenary group is asked to take out someone at the conclave most likely the divine cause what do they care chantry no chantry it’s all a bunch of shit. I mean if the maker was “really” present they would have done something for them. They wouldn’t have let their family be killed or let them suffer as they did so uh fuck the chantry. So that’s their job to take out the divine and whoops someone beat them to the job and then DA events continue as normal from there.

Ok for companions and side characters the list of who Athlen trusts are short but she does share a bond with the companions as shown below:

Cullen- He’s too tight-laced for them but she understands he’s a good leader. Also, she doesn’t work well with serious situations at all so when the Lyrium event happens she doesn’t handle it well. Meaning she is for him stopping Lyrium but kind of stalks him and makes sure he isn’t taking it. Think of it as if Cullen was getting away to the lake and that urge for the Lyrium is coming. Before he can even touch the stuff he hears rumbling from beneath the lake and arising from the lake is Athlen lily pad on the head with a stern expression saying “don’t even think about it” before they disappear back into the lake. They have that vibe with Cullen.

Josephine- They like to tease her thinks it’s hilarious when she tries to be diplomatic because what is on paper doesn’t mean much when someone is about to kill you. Hence the assassin threat Athlen doesn’t handle well. If Athlen would have had her way heads would have rolled, she would have spiked them as a warning to the other assassins to back off and maybe just maybe think of not honoring that contract. Unfortunately, they are unsure why but when Josephine tells them no in a certain tone they obey. Frankly, they find it annoying and very confusing why it happens.

Iron Bull- A tough qunari (she has no clue he’s a dragon) and a huge man with horns? Nice! Athlen only does toro toro with Bull once before learning their lesson. They ask him to teach them new moves Athlen’s a warrior but they could also use help in perfecting their form better. They’re odd drinking buddies. Athlen and the Chargers get along well even if Bull does mother them too much. Athlen enjoys it and thinks “huh so this is family stuff…weird”

Dorian- He’s too easy to tease but they think he’s such a nerd a very sassy powerful nerd but a nerd all the same. They don’t know what to make of them at first but after a center letter arrives, they have a sudden change of heart, and now no one better mess with him. Besides, he gives weirdly good advice most of the time. Athlen has been seeking his advice out more often lately because while he can be sassy, they see he has a gentle heart. They are not used to seeing that gentleness so they gravitate towards it.

Cole- The freaky spirit that speaks in odd phrases and feelings a perfect opportunity to teach them some not-so-good habits such as use them as a way to look into the enemy’s hearts. The best way to end someone isn’t always with a sword but sometimes a threat or ruined reputation. Other than that they have no real concern with Cole. Cole is weird but he’s nice so it evens out. Kind of like looking after a little brother that can see into your most inner thoughts and feelings. Creepy but nice.

Sera- A chaos entity meeting another chaos entity, not a good mix. Sure they get along but do you really want two chaos entities causing madness together? That’s the vibe

Cassandra- They don’t outright dislike her but they are not a chantry believer so when Cassandra says chantry is good. They zone out instantly it makes it hard for them to care about Cassandra

Leliana- They admire her a lot. They like listening to her tales and stories of her adventures. It’s interesting to listen to them but like Cassandra, once she starts talking about how the chantry is all good, they lose interest quickly.

Varric- He’s calming. He reminds them about the bandits but he’s kinder and sneaky. It’s comfortable being around him. They are not so on edge as they are with others. Plus his stories are interesting. He even made Athlen start reading one of his series. It’s taking some time to get through but it is interesting. Not to mention he’s an excellent shot with his arrow and calmer than sera. Athlen likes sera but if they need to do a sneak attack better get Varric. He’s so unassuming and a dwarf who would expect a dwarf to use a bow to kill you not many.

Blackwall- They think he’s a weird dude who looks like a bear and does not handle his reveal well. It feels too similar to her betrayal at the orphanage, not that they were a different person and killed someone just feels the same to them. Never talks to them again after that event.

Vivienne- They hate her but respect her. She knows Vivienne is a bitch but respects her ruthlessness. It’s an art she’ll give her that but otherwise can’t stand her.

Solas- Hates him. Loves to get on his nerves can’t stand how he contradicts himself over the elves constantly. They do not get along well they can barely tolerate him at times because of how he demeans others in the team. Athlen dislikes someone who pulls a “woe is me” constantly or says “well if you hadn’t done this and this and this to my people”. Frankly, they hold the blame on the people who hurt elves not the ones who haven’t killed abused, or sold elves. Not to mention all people should be helped in their opinion even if they know it’s impossible.
