Day 24 - Jacob’s Ladder (1990): Jacobs Ladder seems to be doing a few things at once: a middle finger to the Vietnam war and specifically the experimentation that went on there, an artistic interpretation of purgatory, complete with religious imagery and a Lynchian nightmare stylised like erotica (The directors speciality). These intentions contradict themselves along the way, when all the symbolism and meaning behind everything has a definite answer and very little is left up to interpretation. Adrianne Lyne seems to think this is film is smarter than it is, through the condescending way everything is constantly explained, with heavy ham fisted hinting and exposition. He also seems to think the horror imagery is scarier than it is, putting more emphasis on reveals and little moments of trippy effects. Although, he seems to have nailed this unsettling atmosphere that lingers during each scene, it’s just a shame there isn’t more growth and subtlety. Maybe I’m desensitised to scary and ambiguous content but I just wish there was less hand holding throughout, oh how I wish I watched this years ago during my psychological thriller phase, even the edgy nu metal music video-esque imagery would have been appealing to me.
