Artist Jaclyn Mednicov’s interest in connecting the past to the present involves marking a moment in time, and presenting us with a trace or glimmer of a life that once was - her process documents a variety of plant and animal life, as well as human markings (words, gestures) she discovers. Artist Gwendolyn Zabicki taps into the fascinating function of mirrors and windows as portals to our thoughts. During yesterday’s studio visit, Zabicki shared how these objects assume an invisible role in our every day environments, that is, until a dark shadow or bright white is casted to capture our attention. It is in that fleeting moment that we can feel our thoughts passing through us – they have a voice. Zabicki’s recent body of work explores these moments, even seeks to extend them through playfully disorienting the viewer and asking them to take pause - Is that a mirror? A window? A reflection of a window in a mirror? Kate McCarthy, works from The Fantastic Nest exhibition currently on view @matthewrachmangallery through July 23rd. McCarthy’s body of work oscillates between 2D and 3D, the latter a tangible realization of the former. The plush, hand-crafted objects send the viewer traveling back in time to behold their favorite childhood toy. McCarthy’s creations rekindle the artist’s own fond memories of watching Sesame Street as a child. The artist has revitalized what some might consider a lost art-form, hand-stitching. For McCarthy, thread represents comfort, caring, safety and self-expression. Michael C. Andrews, works featured in the Tuft exhibition currently on view @volume_gallery through July 8th. Andrews worked with one of the last remaining hand-knotted, hand-tufted design manufacturers in the United States, Scott Group Custom Carpets, to carry out his designs. An exemplary case of an artist employing both the analog and the digital in their work, beginning with gestural drawings prior to moving into round of experimentation with form, color and material that relied on software and apps.
