infectious smiles

wheein could barely hold herself straight as she walked home. the three-inch heels that were her standard fare now tripped her up at every other step, and the permanent smile plastered onto her face looked strained and weary.
it had been fine in the morning; what had started as a nasty bout of sneezes was attributed to the cold. it was a common occurrence, nothing to worry about - until the phlegm in her throat began to say otherwise.
against the insistence of her brother to stay home, she donned a face mask and struggled against the wind to daycare. she was responsible enough to keep her distance from the kids as much as possible (but with them clinging to her every hour of the day, there was no way of telling how many she’d passed the germs to, really).
and now she resolved to make a pot of hot broth, visit the doctor, eat as many pills as humanly possible then be up, bright and sunshiney, to be with her kids again the next morning.
there was no way in heck she was going to let another sub-standard substitute teacher take her class again. the last time she fell sick and came back to school, one girl burst into tears saying she’d never seen so much homework in her life, she’s sorry she didn’t complete it, please don’t tell her mother-
and yet here wheein was, a runny nose and possibly a fever with the way she was shivering.
eyes hardening, she stopped in the middle of the street, sniffling a bit, abruptly turned around and headed straight for the nearest clinic.
