Hiroyuki Kakudou, the director of Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, shared on his blog a personal story about a near fatal heart attack last year that required emergency surgery, saying the experience made him rethink projects he hadn't published. In a recent post he said he's been doing much better since his surgery and rehabilitation and his health has improved.

He's now releasing the story of Digimon Adventure 13+, created for fans who weren't satisfied with the previous movies 02 The Beginning, Last Evolution Kizuna and Tri, which also inspired the 2025 PV Digimon Adventure Beyond.

13+ is set in 2013 and the beginning of Beyond takes place two years earlier (2011), showing what happened before the events that come later in the main story. 13+ develops scenes from Beyond, introduces more characters and explores ideas about how the digital world interacts with the real world and parallel universes, tying in with ideas from the original series.

Kakudou decided to share this material now because, while it was already completed, Toei has no plans to release it officially, so sharing it now allows us to see and understand more of the world he's been building.

I haven't read the two parts he published yet but based on my experience with 02, which felt like a mix of many ideas that didn't always connect and led to that very utopian epilogue without much sense, I can see why Toei might not want to make this official. Still, I'm curious to see his pov and how he interprets the characters from Tri, LEK and 02 The Beginning, even if I'm a bit cautious about how the execution will turn out.

So far, he has published 13+ Part 1 and 13+ Part 2, and I also saw last night that withthewill is posting an english version, which may contain some errors but can help get a sense of what's been released.

We'll have to keep an eye on Kakudou's blog and follow this personal project.

Update: Kakudou has now published 13+ Part 3 and confirmed this is the final part of the story. He also said he's planning to release a compiled version later including additional details not shown in Beyond.

Whiiiiiile I actually do not really think we'll get any kind of grand or even sustainable announcement tomorrow (January 5th), since it might really just be about the Butterfly tribute and nothing else...

A part of me still hopes we might at least get more concept art for Adventure Beyond?

Like I pointed out several times before, we have no clues or hints whatsoever in what direction the franchise is headed - the Adventure focus was a clear given considering the 25th anniversary, but even if other series were included partially in celebration material/promo art, nothing really alludes to what will happen next.

It's been a year since that special day when Digimon Adventure Beyond was released as part of the 25th anniversary of Digimon Adventure.

I remember I had just returned to this story after almost 20 years and it felt almost unreal to have something new to watch, even if it was so short.

Back then, I really wished (and I still do) that the idea of a Digimon Adventure novel would turn out to be true.

Seeing Taichi and Yamato together again alongside Agumon and Gabumon, taking on once more the mission to protect both the digital and real worlds, made me smile the entire day on March 20th, 2025 and left me floating for months.

It was also nice to see how much they've grown and to see the bonds and friendships that have formed along the way.

I love to think about the idea that they found a balance between adult life and their mission to protect both worlds alongside their precious Digimon partners.

I hope this isn't the end of Digimon Adventure and that we can continue experiencing new stories.

I want to believe they'll surprise us again someday.

Digimon Adventure timeline

I've been thinking about the possible timeline of the animated Digimon Adventure canon and when I line up the ages (which includes a reference to the possible study phase for each chosen child) with the different entries, this is the reading that starts to make sense to me at the moment:

In Taichi's age group I place Sora, Yamato and Meiko. Mimi fits in Koushiro's, and Hikari, Daisuke, Ken and Wallace fall into Takeru's. Joe, Miyako, Iori and Rui are unique cases within the group.

When it comes to 02 season 1 and 2 (also HT & TGD), the exact ages would vary depending on each character's birthday, which we don't really know. Still, I'm treating those ages as the ones they would be turning during that year (basically the same way I'm doing it across all the entries).

In Kizuna, I see Joe in his internship phase. I place Miyako studying abroad, which could be read as a form of specialized training and Iori in his junior year of high school.

Although we don't know about Rui's studies, I added the possible educational stage he might be in based on his age.

Where I had the most doubts was how to position Beyond. When it was launched, I first saw it as a direct sequel to 02 The Beginning, but over time it started to make more sense to me to read it as an alternate timeline branching after 02.

This reading has now been confirmed by Kakudou in his blog. He clarified that, while the introductory scenes of Beyond occur in 2011, the story continues from there with the main events set in 2013 and beyond. In this light, certain key encounters still happen, such as crossing paths with Meiko, Maki, and Rui, but not under the same circumstances as in Tri, Kizuna, or 02 The Beginning. It presents a variation of the same characters, but different choices and different outcomes.

Update (May 4, 2026): Based on recent context provided by Kakudou regarding Beyond, I updated the timeline placing Beyond in 2011+ and adding Rui's age.
