Oddly enough it was the final act that had offended him. Not
the declaration of whore-if it was a jab at his mother, he didn’t
know it, He simply thought it was about him. Wouldn’t be the
first time someone made a jab at his profession.
But the final words of his late mother-left unsent? Undelivered?
Leo had little value on his own life, but why did this woman feel
the need to be so very cruel?
“By whatever Gods you worship you frigid bitch!”
Leo had seen red. Not that he was violent. But he moved. He
was quick on his feet, dexterous. Lithe. So where as up til then
he had gone with the knights cooperatively, he dove to catch the fragments.
“I don’t care what you think about what I do for a living-not
all of us were so bloody lucky! A mad mother, no father? You’d
think you could afford some manners!” He cried out, “I did what
I could. And I think we just established I’m not a spy. Whore, yes.
Spy, no. What would the harm be in letting a boy continue a final
deed for his mother, especially when its a message that by your
information will like never be delivered!”
Maybe there were tears in his eyes. Not anger. But that was all
he had had. His mother had no belongings. Nothing that hadn’t
been sold. Most of the note had been scattered. Some of it burned.
He’d only managed to save one piece. His mother’s name. He was
resolved. Grasping that tiny piece of parchment and turning away.
She could stop him. Order her knights to take him. To kill him. He
might even cooperate. But no reason to wait around in the mean
while.
