Shaking his head, Bard replies firmly, “All the same, he doesn’t need our derision to add onto everyone else’s. Be nice to him, try not to provoke him, or I’ll hear from you when I get back.”

As the barge leaves, Alfrid presses himself against the dank warped wood on the other side of the water-alley, anxious not to be seen. Perhaps Bard did not hate him as much as he thought he did.
