Drones have helped many organizations and agencies to reduce their workload and work on productivity. Aerial monitoring has become very common for many companies especially construction companies and forest departments to monitor the area with the help of drones.

What Is Surveillance?

Surveillance is the process of observation of behaviour, a variety of activities, or information with the goal of acquiring information, influencing, managing, or guiding it. This can include remote observation using electronic equipment such as sealed television (CCTV) or intercepting electronically transmitted data such as Internet traffic. Simple technical methods such as human signals intelligence and postal interception can also be included.

Screenshots from a TED talk about using drones to monitor forests, wildlife using drone technology. Instead of humans going into the forest to check up on the trees and orangutans, we can program autonomous aircraft to fly over areas of interest and take video for us. They can be used to catch poachers and illegal loggers. Efforts are underway to use them to collect data from embedded forest cameras, microphones and wildlife radio collars. This sounds like a forest panopticon future, where we can see know everything all the time without getting a mosquito bite. 

These things are not stealth, though. To hear what they sound like, do watch one of the videos of a conservation drone taking off (at the 50 sec mark the motor sound is audible, but for the rest of the video there is a music overlay). The incredible noise from these machines will likely scare off a lot of wildlife. Let's hope the motors get quieter in the future.
