also my first day of school is in like less than three weeks *breaks down* but I’m excited! <3
how do you make your posters (sorry if this has been asked a lot
i’m not sure this has actually been asked at all! it’s fairly simple, honestly.
first step: figure out if you know the book or not. if i’ve read the book, then it makes things remarkably easier. if i haven’t then i jump on over to summaries and analysis of the book i’m making the posters for. usually wikipedia, sparknotes, cliffnotes, any of those will do. sometimes goodreads helps as well but i prefer the other three sites.
second step: pictures. for those i pretty much exclusively search on pinterest. if i get really lucky there will be a board where someone will have already grouped together other pictures on the website that represent the book, and it’ll make my life that much better. usually though i end up focusing on specific elements of the book so i’m not searching for broad subjects. i’ll look for destinations, kinds of culture, symbolism, and era. for example; for the book emma i know i’ll look at regency things, british culture, light flowers and likely a blonde leading lady. in general it was easier to do that poster set since i had already read the book, and watched the movie as well as the mini-series.
third step: resize. once i’ve found the six photos that work (sometimes i’ll end up switching them out depending on their quality), then i have to resize them. i use photoshop cs5 for everything including the resizing. i typically don’t grab small pictures, just because sizing them up makes them grainy, and coloring looks bad with them. so i pick larger pictures and shrink them down. i then drag them over to my 268 x 398 canvas (you should try to get your image to fit at least one of those dimensions if you want as much of the photo showing as possible), which i realize is pretty small, but photos tend to look better when you make them smaller rather than larger.
fourth step: coloring. i’ve saved a bunch of psds from this site, i have pretty much all of them under caradocdearborn.tumblr.com/tagged/psds. from there i just throw them around, and then play with the specific layers in the psds. adjusting for people of color, or if i want a color to stand out more or less. this part probably takes second to longest after finding the photos, but it’s also the most fun, because this is where all six of the pictures actually start fitting together in a similar scheme.
fifth step: text. i usually get pretty bored if i use the same exact text set up, so i never have it saved as my own personal psd. i just try to play around with what i think might work. sometimes i’ll do a pretty standard montteserat font, duplicate it, and call it a day. other times i’ll do cutout text where i’ll make a rectangle and make the font see through. it all just depends on personal preference and the style of what you’re making.
sixth step: save and double check. to put it bluntly, i suck at this step because i make typos all the damn time. but usually if i’m lucky i’ll save the images, arrange them in tumble until they look right, and if they don’t then i go back in and redo something so it fits better. for this i suggest either saving your file as a psd separately so you can mess with it again, or just leaving photoshop up with your creations.
now you’re done! but just to add in, you can sharpen your image if it’s a high def image, but otherwise, i wouldn’t sharpen it too much, otherwise it just looks grainy.
if you have any questions about anything, just let me know.
