Prompt #6: Identification

He was almost done. Corebreaker placed the flashlight in his mouth so he could keep the light aimed at what he was doing—splicing wires to add in a physical bug of his own making, while also uploading false identification passes for Critter and Blu so they could enter the building tomorrow. Normally he would have been at a bolt hole doing the work via remote, but Black had found out Riot's people were also on the contract. And if Riot and her crew were on the contract, that meant their small team had to work harder, faster (not to mention be more creative) if they wanted to walk away with the prize at the end of it all.

Also getting ahead of the warborg and her people cut down on the probability of getting into a fight.

Corebreaker really did not want to get into a fight with Riot. Between him and Black, Black had the better chance of being able to withstand Riot's hits. Corebreaker on the other hand, one good smack and he imagined he'd be sent flying across the area to slam into some concrete wall.

Maybe there's something in Botanist's suggestion about a permanent truce. Their runner team was becoming more established, and better jobs had been showing up in the inbox. Blu still had his connections with the Skydragons and there was Botanist's work at his clinic. A soft ping pulled Corebreaker out of his thoughts, and he checked the small handheld. Data upload was complete, and the bug was fully integrated. Finally!

Time to get out of here. Corebreaker folded up the handheld, slipping it into a pocket on his chest. Then he cleaned up his workstation—wires and the bug being tucked neatly away, picking up his bag, wiping down everything he'd touched. Finished, Corebreaker exited the room and headed for the nearby bathroom, entering a stall. As the door closed behind him, he started to strip out of the maintenance overalls he had on, balling them up. The baseball hat that'd been on his head joined it, as well as the paper covers over his feet. His normal street gear had been under the heavy canvas, and Corebreaker unlocked the stall and went over to the sink. Emptying his bag, he turned it inside out to show a different design, then repacked it. Last but not least he slipped on his headphones—and triggered the sensorium mask that was built into the chocobo charm that hung around his neck. Then to be sure, he checked his ID tag—yep, all good.

Tossing the overalls, hat, and paper covers in the trash, Corebreaker exited the bathroom and headed for the building's main exit, looking for all the world like a tourist who had just stopped to use the first available restroom.

"I have never seen a Johnson twitch that much." Critter stated, her eyes wide. "I'm fairly certain at one point they were starting to scratch."

"I thought I told you to hide that thing." Black growled, eying his brother. Botanist was unperturbed, idly scrolling on his tomestone.

"It's not obsolete." He said. "I don't care what that corpo said—and neither should you! You know tomestones these days are nothing but malware-ridden-break-when-you-breathe-on-it pieces of junk!"

"Do you even still get service on that thing?" Blu asked.

"Yes. I have a good, cheap plan, and I'm holding on to the bitter end."

"He's gotten at least five calls so far from his provider begging him to give up the phone and the plan." Black had closed his eyes, rubbing his eyelids.

"Seven."

"Seven?!" Critter and Blu yelped.

"They keep promising me the newest top-of-the-line tomestone, two years of new service free, and the last time they called, said they were adding in a year of free streaming." Botanist started to reply to a text message. "I don't want any of that. I like my tomestone, I like my plan, and it's staying that way."

"I wonder if they're going to call a hit out on him because he refuses to upgrade." Corebreaker whispered.

"I heard that."
