Æves.
One week after the release of their new EP Desire, alt pop duo Æves released the music video for their single ‘Wild Hearts.’ The colorful visual, directed by Arielle Kruger, is a stunning display, reminiscent of a kaleidoscope. ‘Wild Hearts’ showcases the duo in a performance setting, highlighting a rather psychedelic experience for the viewers. Their newly released six track collection Desire contains a combination of stripped down acoustic versions and their originally-recorded counterparts, as well as one remix. The duo, comprised of Molly O’Malley and Matthew Adam, successfully marry together elements of both alternative rock and electronic pop on Desire, creating a light, yet enthralling sound.
With the help of mentor, friend, and late local hero Bryan Puckett, Æves released their debut EP Ignite in June of 2016. After taking some time to hone their craft and evolve their sound, they flew out to Los Angeles to work with Marc Walloch, (Company of Thieves and AWOLNATION) returning with several completed songs and a more focused sense of ambition. In light of all the darkness shaping music and the world as a whole, Æves is paving a way for a future that is colorful and bright.
We had a quick chat with the pair about Desire, ‘Wild Hearts’ and more. Read it below.
What brought the two of you together and want to start making music as Æves?
“We met in middle school, and always had similar music tastes. Our previous projects ended around the same time so we decided to write together. And… now we’re here!”
You’ve just released your latest EP Desire. What was the inspiration behind the release? And how does it differ to your debut Ignite?
“Well, we just wrote what we had to say. I guess that’s the inspiration. It covers a bunch of different emotions concerning a lot of different topics at hand. In terms of differentiation, we felt a bit more confident going into this release. We knew what we wanted to say, and had a better idea of what direction we wanted to go in.”
What was your favourite part recording Desire?
“The whole experience was pretty great, honestly. Can the whole experience be my answer? Because it is.”
Of course! Your latest video is for the track 'Wild Hearts'. What was the inspiration behind the visuals?
“We just wanted to create something that the viewer could get lost in. A bit of a trance, if you will. The visuals all represent what the song is about.”
Will there be any changes to your live performance to coincide with the new release?
“There definitely will be changes, I guess you’ll just have to wait and see.”
Finally, what else does 2018 hold for Æves?
“More shows, more traveling, more releases, new songs, new friends.”
