The day is beautiful. The sun is shining, barely a cloud can be seen in the sky. Small tweety birds chirp as they fly past on a warm wind that's barely a whisper, tousling the silver quills of a nervous hedgehog. All of the signs of spring coming to a close and summer just begining.
Silver, the said hedgehog, bounces his leg as he sits at a metal table outside of The Quaint Cafe, waiting for his date. That date was you. His head rested against his hands, his mouth pursed and eyebrows scrunched in thought. Silver was early to his date, exceptionally early. He wanted to be there before you did, but ended up at the cafe a sheer two hours earlier than what was agreed.
Silver looked up at the street clock, the longest hand slowly ticking away the seconds. Five minutes until the agreed time. He looks back down to the table, shifting in his seat. Silver fidgets with his hands, his mind racing a mile a minute.
'What if they don't like me?' Silver questions to no one. 'What if they only agreed to meet because I was so insistent?' Silver twiddled his thumbs, looking back and forth between the street clock and his hands.
A little clink brings Silver back to reality. He looks up from his hands to see a small teacup in front of him. He looks up a little bit more to see... You. You're wearing your favorite "sun outfit", as you called it once. A cute little blue sundress and a woven wide brim sunhat. Silver looks back at the clock. It's still five minutes until the meet time. He got up from his chair quickly, accidentally bumping the table and almost making the teacup topple over.
"Oh! Um! I'm sorry," he says, his hands outward in a steady motion. You giggle at his goofiness. He looks back up at you, eyes bright in excitement but his face also showing confusion. "You're early!"
"I am!" You say in an enthusiastic way. "I had a feeling I was keeping you waiting." You grabbed onto your dress, moving towards the other chair at the table. Silver quickly moved behind you and scootched the chair out for you. You thanked him before continuing: "How long were you waiting here?"
Silver gave a nervous sound as he thought of what to say. 'Crap, what do I say? I can't say I've been waiting here for two hours!' "... Two hours?" Silver realized what he said right before he sat down. His face went slightly pale as he scootched himself up to the table. 'Wait, hold on, I wasn't supposed to say that!'
The look on your face said it all: complete shock. 'Oh, man. Now I really messed it up!'
"I... Wow. I've never had someone do that for me before. I'm touched." You moved your hand to your chest, above your heart, and had a slight blush on your face that had changed from a shocked expression to a flattered one.
As the conversation lulled, a smell wafted up to Silver's nose. It smelled sweet, familiar... It smelled like warm apples! He looked down at the teacup he almost knocked over, noticing the scent came from it. Was it apple tea? "Did you... get this for me?" He asked. You nodded.
"Mhm. I heard you had a fondness for apples, so I ordered apple tea for you." The smile on your face was genuine and a kind sparkle shone in your eye, almost akin to the soft sunlight in the morning.
"That's so sweet of you... But what about your drink?" Silver's eyebrow scrunched upwards. He didn't want to be the only one with a drink. 'Since you got mine... Maybe I should buy you yours?' He thought.
"Don't worry, I got myself something fancy," you said, lightly waving a hand in dismissal. "Besides, I wanted to treat you. You're cute."
'Cute? They think I'm cute?' "Well, thanks! You're cute too! The color of your hair really brings out your eyes. I like it!"
"Oh, you're too sweet, Silver." You lean forward, your grin never leaving your face. The woven hat on your head slightly bending in the light wind, catching Silver's eye and reminding him of something.
"Say, you wear that hat a lot. It must be sentimental to you, where did you get it?"
"Oh, I do, don't I?" You put your hand on your head, feeling the ribbon that goes around the crown. "I got it from a childhood friend." Resting your hands back on the table, your gaze becomes melancholy for a mere moment before returning back to cheerful.
"Maybe I can meet them someday!" Silver responds brightly.
"Possibly!" You shrug, eyebrows raised. You lean back down on your elbows. "So, Silver," you start. "You never told me. What do you do for a living?"
"Oh! I'm a..." Silver trails off. 'Wait, I can't tell them I'm a time traveler, can I?' "Traveler!"
"So you're like Sonic? I guess being a hero pays the bills in its own way."
"I wouldn't consider myself a hero like Sonic is," he laughs nervously.
"No? How come? You save a lot of people. Heck, you even saved me a few times."
"I'm just a guy who's willing to step up is all!" Silver smiles goofily, cratching the back of his head. "Oh, look, your order is here."
A waitress approached, holding a parfait and some silverware. "Sorry it took a while. Here's your order."
"Thank you," you say as the waitress sets it down in front of you before leaving.
"What did you get?" Silver asked. You took the spoon and dug it into the parfait, scooping it into your mouth. You seemed to be in bliss from the taste.
"A parfait! It's not really a drink, but it's fancy!"
"It looks fancy!" Silver took a sip from the tea you got for him. It was a bit bitter, and slightly cold now, but it definitely tasted like apples!
The two of you chatted away the hours, the sun slowly crawling across the sky. Neither of you noticed the time getting away from you.
"Oh, goodness. Look at the time," you say, looking at your watch. Silver looks up at the street clock.
"Oh, yeah, you're right. It is late."
"Today was a lot of fun, Silver." You grab your bag, getting up from your seat. Silver follows suit.
"Can I walk you home?"
You look at him, a bit surprised before it melts into another smile. It seems like the both of you have been smiling nonstop all day. Silver's cheeks hurt from it. "My, how chivalrous! You might as well sweep me off my feet like a knight in shining armor."
"I'd do it any day!" You giggle at Silver's bold claim.
The two of you walk down the street, cars passing by. Silver's walking on the outside of the sidewalk, close to you. He looks to you from the corner of his eye as you both walk in silence. He can't help but think about how cute you are. 'Out of the two of us, they're definitely the cuter one.'
You slowly come to a stop, pointing at a building "This is my apartment."
"Oh, wow. I didn't think you lived in the city center." For some reason, it struck him as familiar.
"Yeah, it makes commuting easier." You walk up the stairs and turn around. You're slightly taller than Silver now, he has to look up at you. "Thanks for walking me home."
"It's no problem."
"Say, Silver... Would you like to go on another date?"
"Another date?" 'Did she enjoy it that much?'
"Mhm. How about we go minigolfing?"
"Minigolfing?"
"Have you never heard of it before?"
"I can't say that I have." Silver shakes his head.
"Well... It's easier to show than explain. How about next week? We'll meet at the cafe again."
Silver nods. "Sure, that works for me."
"Great!" You lean down, kissing Silver on the forehead. 'Huh?!' "Thank's for the lovely date, Silver. I had a lot of fun." You turn towards the apartment complex's main entrance, opening the door with your keys. "Good night."
"Good... Good night." Silver waves as you disappear behind the door. He turns around, his limbs feeling like Jelly.
'Was that... Confirmation?! She likes me?' "Yes!" Silver yelled, twirling in the air with his telekenisis powers.
He couldn't wait for next week.
