[The real question here is why not.
But on a more serious and technical level, as he's grown up with Lori his whole life, she's learnt his habits and secrets and tends to accept them as they come to play off the illusion of normalcy so that he doesn't feel alienated? At least, that's what it started as. And then somewhere along the lines, she didn't feel as though she had a sibling bond with him so much as she did have a romantic bond with him.
So she began to play with the mechanics of that.
And Adam, being as receptive as he is, began to pick up on that and adapt to it in order to please his sister who has essentially been the only consistent thing in his life. He refuses to fail her, disappoint her, make her upset; thereby influencing his decision to take up the romantic relationship she was instigating.
That's probably the most basic way I can explain it without becoming incoherent.]
