Tonight was the official launch of the AFL Women’s (AFLW) inaugural season, and I just need to tell you all how important that is. AFL is one of Australia’s biggest football codes. The AFLW is aiming to be Australa’s first professional women’s football league. The concept is launching this year with just an 8 week season, plus finals. There are 8 teams representing all states with teams currently registered in the mens league (there’s 18 different mens teams all up). Games are being held at old-school suburban grounds in an effort to connect these new teams with their communities, and entry to every game is free. The women are being paid, but it’s small change compared to the men. The aim of this whole thing is to gain the interest, the crowds, the club members and the corporate sponsorships required to take this from a semi-professional league to one that rivals the men’s.
Now, there’s been talk about women in sport for years. People always say no one will ever watch it, because it’s just not like the men’s league. They could not have been more wrong. Back when they first scheduled this match, the AFLW were aiming for maybe 5000 in attendance. But guess what? Tonight they had to lock the stadium gates. There was standing room only. 25 000 people crammed into a 20 000 capacity stadium to watch Australian sportswomen make history, while thousands more were left waiting outside the gates. They literally could not fit the crowd in to the stadium.
This is girl power. This is amazing. This makes me so damn happy. This is women in sport. We are excited by women in sport. We want to watch women in sport. Never again are Australian girls going to be told football isn’t a sport for them once they reach high school and that is just so amazing to me!
